We might be the most indebted country in world but that only goes for general population owning a lot in home loans and all other loans people are having (cars, TV's, credit cars etc,).

But I believe Australia as a country has paid off it's debts few years ago when we got that first tax cut from Johnie. Government keeping money in it's coffins will not help people pay off their debts.

The problem is though 6 of our largest 10 trading partners (I think) are Asian. They've been hit harder than us. Not much good in us producing if people aren't there to buy!

The other issue is it is political. All of a sudden we say to China "we don't want to buy your XXX, we want to buy our own" and suddenly they turn around and say "well in that case we won't buy your wool anymore". Over a billion people in China, 20odd million in Australia - you work out who loses there...

I personally think the lump sum is a bad idea - increasing the low tax threshold would be a better way to go. Why? Because I am goddamn sick of funding this crap and not being eligible for any of these hand-outs!

End of that rant.

Funny story though - in the Courier Mail today (Qld), they asked 5 people whether they would be spending their lump sum or saving it.

1 said he would be spending it;

3 said saving it;

get this;

1 said he was going on an overseas holiday later in the year and would spend it there!

Hilarious.........sort of.

Bear in mind that for all the money the government gives out, it gets back 36% of it. Say it gives out $110:

$10 = GST

$30 = Assumed 30% tax on whoever's pocket you put the money into when you spend it.

Hence it gets back $40 out of $110. Obviously a very basic analysis.

Having said that I'm pretty sure there's no GST on overseas travel!

Am I right in saying that people on the dole will not qualify for this hand out?

At least that's what I understood when I read about it in the paper today...
