Making An Awd Territory 2wd For Dyno Runs

Simon at XFT doesn't tune Territory's on their available AWD dyno because they dance around and try to 'climb off' during dyno runs.

Similar to this video (see first dyno run)

There's an tuning outfit in Sydney that tunes Territory's on a 2WD dyno. Apparently this is done by removing the ABS fuse.

Is this a common practice for other Ford tuners? What are the ramifications of tuning a Territory this way?

ie Any strain on driveline components?

Will the tune correctly match the characteristics of the vehicle once power is returned to all four wheels?

Does anybody actually know why they move around this way on the dyno?

Hub type dyno best for these situations, just jack up and remove wheels,bolt up hub adaptors and slide into load cell unit, lower car onto load cell and bobs your uncle. Dynapack dyno at All Star Garagejust the trick.

The reason that Territory's move around on a Dyno Dynamics like this is the Dyno is not being run in the correct format.

Early runs of our TTG had it moving around on the dyno; this was also reflected in the graph with many spikes. Latest tune at Xspeed with the update from Dyno Dynamics has removed all of these spikes and the car no longer moves around!

How does removing the ABS fuse make the car rwd.

It doesn't, its a fulltime AWD with drive constantly sent to the front wheels with a chain drive. You can never disable it unless you remove the chain.

Only GTR's can run RWD with the ABS fuse removed because they are an on demand AWD setup that only sends drive to the front when it detects slip at the rear wheels. Because it uses the ABS wheel speed sensors for this it dissables the AWD when the fuse is removed. Territory can't do this.

I posted the same question here.

Basically it's full time AWD with a 62:38 split between the rear/front wheels. Assuming you stopped the front wheels spinning then the rears would keep going. Pulling the ABS fuse would in theory also disable the DSC and prevent the system from trying to apply the rear brakes while the fronts were locked down from spinning freely.

So the video in the original post may be legit but the consensus is that this method of tuning is not recommended.

Either way I had already booked the Territory in at XFT last week to be done end of this week. Not sure if they know about the dyno update 'junkie' but I believe they will be 'road tuning' it.

Had mine up on a awd mainline dyno today, we had to pull the abs fuse as is it was kicking in the trc/abs.

apart from that the dyno did not like the torque split and we could not successfully power run the car, 

 

the operator had not done a territory before and was going to look into how to do it correctly.

 

from my perspective watching its not doing a direct drive torque split, and the rears were getting power and the front would receive a pulsing motion of power once the torque and load started.

You need to de activate the front rollers and request rear only and let the front rollers free roll instead of looking for constant load when you have an uneven loading AWD system especially for just tuning purposes 

 

The mainline can derive torque split when looking for % and fault finding but not needed for tuning 

 

imagine a treadmill that’s a new style powered unit trying to keep up with you skipping along vs running against it your going to end up sore with bung knees quickly....

then an old style treadmill that’s literally just free rolling without any feedback or much adjustability in tension will accept your shenanigans all day long 

 

set the rear roller to new spec and front roller to old spec and you can run at the back and skip at the front
