hey lads, new to forum.

pretty keen on buying an ex hertz rental 07 bf2 mkii xr6. Its done 43k, comes with 12 month rego, still has ford warranty till august next year, service history, 4 new tyres, good clean condition, never been in accident, the hertz guy said that they only sell the good vehicles at their dealerships, the ones in bad condition/been in accident get auctioned off. $21k.

Im a bit skeptical about it being an ex rental, could have been thrashed etc, I guess you never know with used cars... Just wanted some extra opinions. I figured that since its still under ford warranty for next 1.5+ years, I should be sweet? Should I get it RACV inspected?

Cheers.

You mean definatly has been thrashed..!

I would always get it RACV checked first before buying too. It is a well spent $160

Every rental I've ever driven I've found the rev limiter in....

If you want to get an idea of how they're treated go park outside the Hire Car long term parking yards at the Airport and watch the guys transfer them over to the pick up yards...

I guess it's the same as buying an ex fleet/government/police car. If the price is right and everything checks out OK then go for it.

And I wouldn't say thrashed...maybe just well run-in

my bf xr6 na is an ex leasing and its fine. although I was lucky in the fact that dad leased it for 6 months while he waited for his new car so we got to sus it out a bit. it was only after this period was over that the company (being american and getting screwed with the crisis) decided to auction off all their cars for liquidity and we decided to keep it for me. also, because wed already had it for a while they gave us preference, lower price and even threw in a free inspection in which they switched over some suspension bolt and even threw on a complete new set of tires...even though they were fine and the new ones seem pretty cheap <_< . however, long before we decided to kep it I must admit, most times I borrowed the car I wasnt nearly as conservative as I am now that its mine :stirthepot: when you take it out of the garage and drive it away slowly it does make some rattly clunk noises just before it switches into second (its an auto) but that's been there since I can remember. my guess is the guys at telstra who leased it beforehands weren't too kind with it either. we checked out some of the other cars for auction as well and one of the r6's made some very worrying noises on startup. my 2 cents is if you havnt driven the car your looking at the least you can do is get it checked out by some mechanics.

thanks 4 reply. I have driven the car and it sounds and feels good. That being said, I am not a mechanic who could pick out a potential problem, and unfortunately me and my mechanic live very far from the dealership, so only thing I could do is get a comprehensive check done by racv which costs non members $266. If everything ends of being fine then I'll probably buy it. At the end of the day, its under ford new car warranty for another 1.5 years, so if something happens, ford should have me covered. Anyone have any experience dealing with ford warranty if something happens?

I wouldnt buy any car where its primary use has been by a non-owner. Police, goverment, rental all alike. Everytime I get to drive a company car, it gets treated like im @ bathurst and I KNOW 90% of ppl do the same. Not saying there all fuct but ill bet most are.

I would stay clear of it.

See, if the car is yours you might still flog it, do a burnout every now and then etc but you wouldn't do it on every trip. Not to talk about cold starts....
