because u have a 1.5MB plan with is 1500kb with equals around 187KB

theres a diff between KB and kb

Kilobyte (kB)

Kilobit (kb)

if your only getting 65KB ide call your ISP and log a speed fault

you must have a very poor line to be getting only 1300 have you tried isolation test?

The max you'll see on 1.5mbit is ~160kb/s if you live close enough to the exhange.

If it was going at only 65kb/s for some files then the connection between you and the download isn't that good and there's nothing you can do about that :)

If you're syncing at 1.3mbit then that's still normal if you don't live really close to the exhange.

if your not syncing at 1.5MB because of line distance you shouldn't have ADSL

find out what site your ISP uses for speed tests, sites such as speed test.net are inacurate

test from there see how you go.

check make sure all home phones have filter/splitters on them

remove all items from line except modem and check sync speed

Howdy,

There could be a couple reason's why you only got 65KB, it depends on the site you download from. Not all sites have the capability to upload to you at your maximum download rate.

1.5mb would equal 1536kb which would give you a maximum download speed of 192kb (just dived it by 8 (the size of 1 byte)).

The other reason could be a problem with the connection as someone else mentioned or your pretty far away from the exchange.

The further from the exchange the less speed you get, also there will be a delay between your modem and computer which can affect it (latency)

doing a test from here www.speedtest.net should be able to tell you your download speed

I guess you could call me a nerd :)

exetel

I think I see your problem :)

...

good info there but the speedtouch 530 should be 10.0.0.138 and have no password by default ;)

1317 download is about 1.3mb is it?

1300ish kbit is good. the line speed should be 1536kbit, giving you a download speed of 1536kbit minus TCP/IP overheads

correct on the speeds. when taking overheads into account the most you will see when downloading will be 150-160ish kilobytes/sec

incorrect on the distance to exchange bit. 1536kbit is 1536kbit no matter how long the line is.

not so right on the 1.3mbit sync either :P

if your line is provisioned on a Telstra Wholesale port then it is capable of syncing at 1536kbit. if you are not getting this (check your modem config for this, not your download speed) then your ISP needs to log a fault on your behalf.

http://mirror.exetel.com.au/pub/adobe/AdbeRdr810_en_US.exe

download that and see what speed it gets. that file is hosted by your ISP and so has the least amount of things that can slow you down because its on the same network.

using a single threaded download client like Internet Explorer may not see full speed. if your not getting 150ish kB/s try a download manager to split the files into multiple parts. I use Flashget.

good luck with the 1.5mbit. will be a world of difference coming form 256kbit :D

Ha ha this is funny, just got off the fone from a mate - talking him through setting up his network, modem, and internet!

Thanks I wasnt around for this as well!!! I would have been ripping my hair... Look like your sorted!

As the others have all said there is a number of reasons you are getting readings of 1.3 meg... this is NORMAL for a 1.5meg connection...

btw - is the connection 1.5 up and down or just down?

here is another speed test site you can try - http://www.zdnet.com.au/broadband/speedtest.htm

whatever your reading from say - 3 known test sites is, average them out and it is a good indication of what you connect is running at...

I run a 1.5 connection and at best we get a 1250kb or there abouts line speed... (down)...

So dont worry... all is good!

* Also if you are running a wireless network in your house, this 'may' cause some speed loss if you are running a poor signal...

* Also additional computers dl'in updates or the likes will affect your tested line speed as they will be sharing the bandwidth, so make sure you isolate the connection from your modem/router to a line/cable connection and only one PC on the network at the time when testing line speed!

If you dont have a wireless router and use a notebook - get yourself one... you too can sit on your arse on the couch watching the cricket and doing the forum thing! hehehe

BTW- this will also explain the line distance issue the guys are referring to with regards to distance from exchange...

Generally it is a guide - however for 1.5 and below connections under 4kms, there should be very low if any loss at all, typically the loss you see is acceptable, some refer to as network overheads etc... Basically like fords "its within limits"!

ADSL2 however does have limited distance/line speeds and will in fact have a noticeable lower speed over distance...
