A downsizing to smaller, more practical and fuel efficient vehicles is inevitable. Their not morons, their just not interested in large thirsty cars anymore. T's and 8's dont interest everyone and that's why smaller cars have been outselling big cars for years.

There are plenty of much better cars than these Toyotas, but I think they would cause too much excitement for these conservative types. Few people could care less about the dynamics of their cars and the Toyotas are seen as a safe buy. Hey do you like my bland new Camry?

That's not entirely true, and is a fairly simplistic overview of the Australian car market.

Late model camira is still battling for the No1 spot in sales, despite being a thurstier, inferior car to the Falcon. The Falcon outsells Camy despite the Camry's superior fuel efficiency and perceived build quality. Large cars are selling inlarger numbers now than 15 years ago.

While there has been a shift away from large cars recently (realistically only in the last couple of years to any real degrss), prior to that large cars and SUVs, etc were booming. There is also a hell of a lot more choice in cars now. Prices between Falcon and Commodores and the likes of Merc, BMW, Audi, VW, etc are closer than ever (excluding the high end euro models). Locally produced cars are no longer the cheapest options, especially with the Hyundais, Kias, etc. And, exquipment levels and build quality of all cars are improving all of the time.

The biggest issue is makers of large cars were too busy riding the wave of a boom (similar to the finance sector recently) to do any real planning for the future. Much of the issues with fuel prices and large car consumption was perpetuated by the media, yet the car giants did nothing to combat that. Also, in an atempt to make cars more appealing, manufacturers are jamming so much equipment into to cars, they keep getting heavier (to the point where Today's Corala weights as much as an Falcon).

As far as people wanting gutless cars, why not. With the way the government is out of control when it comes to opressive road usage restrictions, many people are rightly giving up their desire for nice cars as there is no where left for them to enjoy them. The government is making sure that any passion in cars is stamped out, leaving them as nothing more than transport. Unfortunatly, enthusiests are a dying breed.

Top that off with Ford's utter lack of any real management or marketing skills and you get the problems they currently find themselves in.

There's no simple solution, but Ford needn't be doing as bad as they are.

You're definitely right about that. 75% of my friends couldn't give a damn about performance, they just want low running costs and something that works. Who are my friends ? 21 year old uni students like me, some even study mechanical engineering and don't care deeply if their car is mediocre.
