Ba Xr6t V Boss 260

Well I had a test ride this morning in the boss 260 I think that both cars will be quite close as far as 0-100. I think if one of the mags did a comparo between the two vehicles it wood make great reading.

In both cases I was a passenger, but seat of the pants and also taking note of throttle input and keeping an eye on the instrumentation is how I did my assessment. For the good 10 mins I was in the car I think I looked at the road two or three times.

Both drivers had trouble making nice clean and quick shifts.I think once you had the car for a day or two you would get used to it and shifts would become smoother. Thou the couple of the salesmen at the dealership said the box in the xr8 was the pick. Apparently it easier to shift through the gears than the box in the xr6t.

I did notice the drive line shunt some people have mentioned, a few times throughtout the test, not that it concerned me, I just noticed it.

I walked around the car while it was idling and the exhaust note was nice and subdued. The salesman reved the engine while I was aroud the back of the car and it was great note for a factory exhaust.(the sound of the xrt6 is also great for the standard system)

But the v8 was extra special once we drove out of the dealership and nailed first and second gear. To hear this quad cam engine under load was sheer ecstasy. Also the induction roar from the engine bay was glorious. The sound of this engine on trailing thottle, changing down throu the gears with a nice blip in between changes was fantastic.

I drive an el xr8 at the moment so I have a slight bias towards the v8.

When sitting at he lights in boss xr you wouldn't know you have this v8 lump under the bonnet (apart from the bulge of course). No vibration or noise enters the cabin with all windows wound up . For the majoityy of the drive all four windows were down, air off and radio off.( who needs a radio)

I am not used to not being able to see the lower part of the bonnet like I can in the el. (The bulge accentuates this aspect) I normally have the seat down low when driving, so I will have to change my seat postion.

All in all both cars are fantastic motor vehicles and I wish I could have one of each.

One thing that suprised me is that they have the some Gov fuel comsuption figures of 12.5l/100km. I know these figures are done under specific condtions, but for them to have the same figure is surprising.

My heart says go for the v8 mate, but my brain says go with the xr6t and spend the extra on mods, wheels etc.

Now if I go for the v8 what do I do? I have to purchase an auto, so do I place an order now and hope they put a decent auto box behind the boss. Which sort of worries me a little especialy when I hear that the auto box has been the cause of the delay.

Or do I wait and see what happens and wait for the reviews?

I'll shutup now.

my 2cents

Hello everyone!

For me the Turbo is an exceptional car but my pick would be the XR8. The turbo just lacked that little bit below 2000rpm that I like to have.

You going to get one Asher?

No question about it matchew. Go the 8'mate.

Although I haven't driven either, both the T & the 8 look great (obvious), go like the clappers (I'm sure) & put a big'ol grin on your face (I'm sure).

I've been driving my first V8 for just over a year now & I cannot see myself moving to anything else.

The V8 has an aura about it - something that is difficult to put your finger on - but being an 8 owner yourself, you'll know what I mean.

If you're not sure, take a T for a drive on your own to help make up your own mind.

The question is whether you can justify the $10k or so premium for an 8 over the T and whether you can wait for the XR8 to come out with an auto.

Either way, you can't go wrong.

PS : Don't worry bout the auto - the unit they finally put in the XR8 will most likely be a brand new design and will eventually make it's way to the T anyway.

I think the question that begs to be answered is...

"Is the 8 worth the extra $6300 on top of the turbo??" Different engine and gearbox, same everything else. Extra power but extra weight....$6300 is not a small price difference...

:P But think of the potential "easy" power from the "T" over the V8

I don't think ppl are going to have too many issues getting large power gains from the XR8 either. If the SOHC V8 outputs 220kw stock, the DOHC V8 didn't need much tuning to get 260kw out of it. I'll dare say, a proper exhaust setup should see the XR8 nudge the 300kw mark, because the manifold on the Boss 260 looks a little restricted in several places.
