Mate,

Firstly due to trying a few things and not getting anywhere... First thing I would advise you do is - BUY A NEW HDD, or external HDD enclosure, and try the recovery process with the HDD as a additional drive, rather then a OS/Boot drive...

Will make life far easier... (exception to restore point on xp)...

Do you have a notebook or 2nd PC?

If you believe it was a virus, plug the drive into a EXT USB box, plug it into your (or someone elses) PC, and run Avast in full scan mode. If its a Virus this should get ride of the virus. First step sorted.

Once the scan has finished, you can then try to explore the drive content. As the drive will be a NON OS/System drive you should be able to review all files - even hidden files. If no luck, leave the drive connected, click on 'START', then 'RUN' and type 'CMD'.

This will open command prompt type: (the drive letter) - ie. e:

This will then take you to that drive letter.

Then type "dir/p/s/ahs"

This will now display every file on the HDD page by page including hidden files... it may take a few mins for you to view all the files if there is lots, however at least you will find if the files are still on the drive or not...

If they dont show up, you may find the drive was formatted as the other guys have mentioned.

In this case - not all is lost (well just yet anyways)... You may be able to run a recovery program to suck some of this back off... However best bet, get a data recovery place to work on this for you... May cost anywhere from 500$ upwards... So ask yourself if the data is worth 500$ + or not?

You can try a use (buy/download) a data recovery program yourself, however not recommended if your not sure....

Either way, MAKE SURE YOU BACK STUFF UP IN FUTURE!!!
