seriously mate before spending money on PCM's and sh!t

go out and buy a new set of coil packs and fit them at the end of the day even if it does'nt work its worth while investment considering the age of your car

I have the same problem as you , idles bad , when I stop idles good for about 10 sec then it skips fills like its missing . hope you fix yours so I can get an idea with mine , coil packs maybe ?

mine had similar issues a couple of weeks ago I changed the coil packs,tps and spark plugs was still no good. Ended up being 2 wires that run behind the head to a cam sensor near the heater hoses had got too hot and melted the wires.

yep, coils is very next thing to do..... let all know how it goes.

Im gonna check the wiring from my pod(Air/fuel) to the PCM (im guessin that's what it connects to or some sensor along the way)

As previous owner did a shockin job of setting it up. I have already rewired a few things cos of the bad wiring.

So as declared, coils first then if it fails......PCM :crybaby:

do you know what the codes were? sounds like the ecu did pick something up...

and its probly too late now but the smaller spark plug gap is done to stop boost from blowing the spark out, it actually makes the idle a bit rougher (only by a bees d*ck, so definitly not the cause of your problem)

hope you get it sorted out and I'm with the other guys, I wouldn't be blaming the ecu just yet...

I had a similar problem with mine, it's gotta be the coil packs cause I replaced mine. I first noticed it after I serviced my car new oil filter, plugs, washed the K&N filter etc... took it out for a drive (about 20 mins) then the sh*t starts to idle funny :oohwoah: when I put the clutch in and roll down the road. If you sit at the lights for to long it drops to about 250rpm and sometimes stalls the lights all come on and and oil one flashes and beeps. So packs and plugs change em and you should be sweet. :3gears:

is there any way of checking the coil packs to see if they are faulty or not .

I beleive they can be tested, but not sure how. Maybe someone else can inform us?

I've heard of another member having a TPS on the throttle body changed AND had a TPS on the pedal box changed. I didn't think there was a TPS on the pedal box, but he had a problem and they had changed it hoping it would correct the issue.. I'll go out and have a look at a pedal box later on and take photos if I can see anything that looks like a TPS.

Also did you put the dielectric grease onto the plugs/coils when you put new plugs in? The dielectric grease makes a better conduction, and reduces the ability for a miss. It's not expensive.

It may well be coilpacks, they shouldn't cause the car to stall though.. it should still run on 4 cyl - poorly, but should still run. You may have a few bad coilpacks though, but I would think you'd notice it when the car's pulling too.

But you also said something about the previous owner changed some wiring.. this is worrying. I would check all wires, the OEM wiring is very small gauge so if you were to cut a wire and strip the insulation then solder it to another wire, you'd want to be sure you didn't cut any of the strands as the wire can only conduct through the available strands. If it is a single solid strand it's not as much of a worry.

But if it has had alot of modifications to the wiring loom, I would suggest getting another wiring loom. Whether it be the engine loom, or an engine bay loom you'll be able to replace it.

But also check around the back of the engine as Angry Trev said, it may have just melted some insulations and causing an arc.

Also, have you changed the lambda sensor in the exhaust? they do give up eventually and start transmitting false signals to the ecu. This can cause various issues similar to yours. It is not an expensive part, and worth changing even if just for the sake of it.
