Raised by someone else in the infamous '0-100 which is quicker' thread, but I am interested on wider opinions on whether downshifting in SSS mode instead of using the brakes is a bad thing for the engine. Since I have been getting brake shudder, I have been using the SSS mode more, and have taken a liking to slowing the car down by going down through the gears instead of using the brakes. I find I use the brakes much less than before, especially in heavy traffic. But, am I damaging the engine in the process  ?

Any thoughts?

There is an old saying....

Brakes are for slowing and gears are for going....

I cant see that you would damrge the engine doing this though. Get the brakes fixed more importantly!

Get up Ford and tell them to fix em. Other wise they will get the "Forum curse"!

I'm always using the SSS to slow down.

I can't bear to pull up such a heavy car on brakes alone, and would be interested to hear some technical info on this...

I use sss to brake all the time, I tend to go for a downshift before the brake every time (used to manuals  )

Shouldnt do any damage, and if I does I'll throw the keys at the dealer and get them to fix it, advantages of new car warranty, it doesnt say anywhere in the manual not to use it to slow down.

I also use the SSS to slow down. Would seem a bit strange to have the SSS for upshifts only. I began using it to try and avoid the no cost optional extra that many have experienced (shudder) but alas I believe after 6000 kms, the first signs are appearing.

In any case, I feel the downshift provides great braking assistance so I'll keep using it. I've driven the car this way with a dealer and he basically said it was fine. 2 years and 9 months warranty left.....

I have always used the gears to slow me down but only gently. never put it into a gear that the vehicle is going to fast for and have never had any problems with transmissions, both manual and auto.

I sometimes use the gears to slow down in my auto, but usually if I'm doing a high speed stop or slow down for a corner. Problem is sometimes the box won't go back a gear, need to shift it 2 sometimes 3 times before it will go down a gear. I've put this down to me going to fast and there must be some cut out to stop it shifting back at too higher speed in case of engine/tranny damage. I must check this out again on the weekend as I seem to recall this wasn't always the go.
