I dont know if I would want it back after all this... That sounds like its going to be a bit of a $$$ exercise!

Look at it this way... hopefully you wont need to do anything on it after its all fixed up - will be almost as good as new!

Yep almost new, that's a good selling point.

Even onced its fixed theres no way im keeping it. I mean seriously the water pump connected to timing belt? I dont understand the logic there.

Though I am also disapointed with the car yard as they replaced the tming belt but not the water pump.

Im hearing that its common practice to replace the water pump while doing the timing belt.

Yep, very commin to see water pumps driven off the timing belt.

Nearly every Honda that has a timing belt, the water pump is driven off it, with the exception of a few eaely model Civics and a few others.

These belts as mentioned should be replaced every 60000 klms, but the tensioner and idlers should also be replaced at the same time. Normally water pumps are not replaced with them unless there is a problem with the pump.

Normally if these belts break, they bend valves which would explain your low compression, the head would have to be removed to fix this

for one Opel and Expensive Daewoo are GM..... enough said....

I still dont understand why on modern engine makers insist on using a farking rubber belt to drive the gams and other crap.

As for the ford motors... Look at a taxi... 1 million ks + out of a motor. I have never heard of a falcon engine needing a new timing chain. I spoke to an aussie (Yes they still drive taxis) and he told me that his car had done 1mill k's and no engine drama what so ever now the gear boxes are another problem.

Also the timing chains are not just an ordinary chain ie push bike chain much thicker and are driven of mulitple sprockets or gogs

Its real shame on the manufactures, all belt driven engines should be made to free spin not only some.What I mean by free spin is that if the belt breaks valves dont smash pistons.Magna some free spin some don't, most four cylinder Expensive Daewoo crap does not.To replace just the belt $250 -$500 .Bend a few valves at least now with most 4 cylinders being multi-valves engines your good to bend about 8 you could be looking at $2000.00 plus for top end repairs only.Hope santa brings you a couple of grand ,you dont need it at this time of the year .Cheers Nick

Yep ive seen the timing chain on my old el and it was heavy duty, I sore the astra timing belt today and its pathetic really. Would be no thicker than the cars drive belt.

Yer mechanic said wose case around 2,500 but that was before he found the chewed out thread in the crank case. ho ho ho ..
