Hey Guys

I am about to buy my first XR6T and I noticed there have been a couple of threads that have covered having a first crack at buying one, but most of those are here is a car do you reckon this is a rip off. I just wanted some more general pointers for when I am looking around.

So

I am looking at the BA MKI or II and just wanted to know from any of you guys who currently have one, things to look out for in the BAs that have done between 60,000ks and 100,000ks. I am looking to pay under 20k and get a nice stocker. I don't really care about interior (leather/cloth) and I have seen you should see if you can get the premium brakes if possible, but I want to know things to look out for that only someone who has experienced or owned one would know. Like drivetrain noise, gearbox clunking, steering issues........pretty much anything that might end up costing me a sh#t load that could be easily missed.

I will probably get an RACQ inspection done on it anyway but any pointers would be awesome.

Check to see if it has had a diff bush done! Cause they usual split!

Other things that are a common beak are p/s high pressure hoses

Door lock actuators are another thing that are common in the model!

Other than that that what I can think of now!

Sure others will chuck some other pointers

With the km range u looking at it should still be a clean tidy unit!

You chasing an Auto or Manual?

This probably isnt what you want to hear, but if you plan on modding your T reliably you might need to stretch the budget to at least a BA 2(if manual) or an early BF (auto) depending on what trans your want...

I was thinking an auto but I am not overly fussed if I find a reasonable deal I don't really mind either way. I was thinking of just get a custom tune injectors and exhaust done, if I wanted to go any further than that I would probably get a rebuild done as well anyway so I could get the box strengthened up. What sort of issues do the MKI's have with the auto's????

Put it this way... If I was buying an Auto, id make sure it had the ZF6 box (BF only) and if I was going manual it'd have the T56 (BA mk 2 onwards). As far as both of these boxes, there havent been many people with many issues and as far as im aware, I dont think iv heard of either being rebuilt. They are both solid as a rock. For the mods you have listed, with either box you shouldnt have to worry about touching it.

I wont comment on the T5 manual (waste of time) and although the BTR4 speed auto is slightly better, a lot of people have spent a fortune on rebuilds over and over again.

Regarding internals - all 6T's with a build date of June 06 onward come standard with the F6 spec bottom end (stronger rods and valve springs), so again if the budget can stretch it would be advisable to make the most of this...

Again, it all comes down to your budget, but in real terms if you buy the right car first up its gonna save you a lot of money and headaches in the future so choose your model wisely!

Have a read through the forums, there is plenty of further detail on the brief information above.

Probably??? Your looking at a 4 year old turbocharged car with up to 100,000k's on it. Likely flogged, likely modified, likely problems. Above anything else should be an inspection of some kind.

If you're in FNQ, we've got an '04 BA XR6T for sale soon.

It's Vibe, auto, mechanically stock as the day she rolled out of the factory.

Our lease expires this week after 4 years and 90k kms, and it still has 1 years worth of factory warranty left.

Will be advertised for $19k

The reference to "likely flogged" always amuses me. I drive 35,000kms a year on Sydney roads so I get to see my share of traffic. I have had an XR6T for 5 years and I can honestly say (afterall, Honest Gaza wouldn't lie), I don't flog it. I have been passed by many XR6T's ....and I would suggest that they too were not being flogged at the time. Some of us appreciate the instant acceleration on occasions, and that is enough for us.

I'd be interested to know how many forum members here would say that they flog their cars.....or do we assume that while we look after our own cars....everyone else is a hoon.
