My 35 years on the roads tells me that in general, Butto is correct. It's oldies, people who lack confidence, knowledge or have an infirmity beneath their poor driving skills. These are also the folk who live in the 20 metres around them rather than the 100+ metres we all know should be a key point in focus. One aberration to this however is that I believe there is an increasing number of aggressive young drivers who do this to taunt other drivers and potentially cause conflict. I have seen the latter more frequently on both the gold coast and sunshine coast highways.

One really important point people, please eject any notion of "teaching them a lesson" or "revenge" in your reaction to people who drive slowly in the right lanes. Never forget your primary responsibility is to get yourself (no 1) and other drivers (No 2) to their destination safely and you must do everything within reason to avoid increased risk in these situations. Yes, its human nature to attempt to "sort them out" but this goes against every principle of good driving. It is not your job to discipline such drivers or educate them in real time. By all means toot them to warn of a dangerous situation (totally legal as using the horn is the mechanism to warn of a dangerous situation.....don't go overboard though, if they panic and an accident occurs you maybe held to account), take their plates and report to police or get a passenger to take a photo...all ok. Any legal action to remind them of a dangerous situation is being a good driver. As another poster has said sitting in front of them and slowing down further is merely (potentially) making the situation worse similarly to tailgating.... and may land you in worse trouble yourself.

I apologize for the lecturing tone of this post but I'd really like younger drivers to learn to rise above the emotion side of things and think "big picture". It's hard I know, but please consider this when you are in this situation. Remember...it's 90% likely just a poorly skilled or troubled person doing this, not someone trying to play with your mind. Think of them as sick and in denial (hehe)....

Whilst not condoning the behaviour you're lecturing against ( :censored: ), that comment is laughable. I can just imagine the reaction to you reporting someone at the local police station for not keeping left.

I just turn the high beams on. they eventually move.

half the problem is the same people who sit out there dont check their mirrors so they have no idea you (or anyone else in the line of cars stuck behind them) are there. dont bother flashing the high beam either, just leave em on.

I had an XY I used to tow a boat with. I had 4 Hella Rally 2000's on the front of it (2 pencil and 2 spread beams). When people didn't move after ample oppurtunity, I would make the back of their heads melt and they would soon move.

Dangerous situation - yes correct - however to warn another motorist to simply "GET OUT OF THE WAY" I remember being advised by a officer of the law - this is not legal use of the horn... (He may have been wrong, and or it may have changed, so not to sure on that one)... He advised that it may cause panic and therefore cause the situation to get worse - if even a general 1-2 second horn...

Like wise with headlight flashing....

Again I may be wrong...

lots of right hand lane hogs here in Darwin,

you just sit back and wait, sooner or later they'll pull over to get another beer, re-pack the bong...ect ect.

tail gating and getting upset doesn't do a thing.

9 times out of 10, the use of a horn, while your already up there bum will cause them to freak out and apply the breaks. It is not a normal reaction for people to plant the accelerator when they hear the sounding of a horn up there bum.

There ignorance or inattentive driving does not excuse tail gaiting or horns/headlights.

Alright kiddies let me tell you a story, that happened to me when I was as young and stupid like Rodger Cordia.

Traveling from Frankston to Melbourne Grand Final Day, a little old lady in the right lane doing 80 km/h wagging her finger at anyone trying to pass (yes ther was acar in the left lane alos doing 80/km/h. My interpretation was it was her trying to do her bit and stop speeding on Grand Final day. Now me being young and a bit of a hero (tounge and cheeck), I watched this from three cars back and decided to overtake on the right shoulder and grass. This manouver was succesful and I passed her. Now this is were it gets interesting, she then decided that I was public menance number one and proceeded to chase me and attempt to take down my number plate. I sh*t you not I had to do in excess of 180km/h and a guy who had been stuck behind her also had to perform blocking manovers on her to allow my getaway.

Its was funny at the time, although my girlfriend did not think so and rightly pointed out that had she got my number plate or had the police or other concerned citizen witnessed my behaviour, I would have spent time behind bars. Not to mention that should I, the little old lady or any other motorist been injured, what would have happened to me.

The moral of my story, people are unpredictable, who would have thouight a littlke old lady blocking traffic at 80 km/h would have speed up to 140 plus km/h to try and dob someone in.
