Auto Trans And Radiator

Hey Guys,

BaII XR6T - stock standard 60,000kms

So I recently went for a trip to the Hunter and back (bout 2 hr drive each way) and ever since then the gear changes, particularly 1st seem to be 'slipping' (I.e. I put my foot on the gas from stop and it goes to like 3k rpm and then finally it clicks into gear). Also, separately I've noticed that the overflow box for the coolant is beige (like my girlfriends liquid foundation). It has been running alittle hotter than usual but not overheating. Occassionaly the re is some drip of the radiator after it's been parked for a bit.

I recently read a post that mentioned:

"Over time we have had cars in our workshop where the auto cooler inside the radiator has split, so when the car is hot and stopped, the build up of pressure forces the water into the automatic fluid line then into the box.

Just something to check."

Is it likely that this is the case here.... I.e. the two fluids have mixed and that's what's causing the trans issu and the weird coloured coolant?

I've got it booked in for Monday for it's 60k service but I'm wondering if I need to be waiting when they open tomorrow.

Also, is this covered under warranty... (my wallet says please be yes!)

Cheers fellas.

SOunds like it has split and pissed oil into your radiator and water into your trans.

Get it looked at ASAP I think otherwise you might be up for even more $$$.

Wait for someone else though to confirm.

Yep mate, that sounds like that's it...

Pretty common with the BA's actually...

Do what maximus said - have it looked at ASAP!

make sure they flush all the crap outa your trans when they fix the rad as the coolant in there will kill the box real quik

so full trans flush and new fluid is needed plus the rad

I fitted a seperate trans cooler to mine cut the radiator out of it alltogethr

If its 'milky' like you say its water in the fluid, same goes for most oils. And I assume the reason why its not going into gear until higher rpm is because the oil in the box is low and or the coolant in it may be not enough flow to engage.

Had the dumb a$$ ford mechanics do that to my old au when I had my auto flushed, they just filled it and didn't run it then top it up again so it was reving then slamming into gear.

Good luck with the clean up but I did what our06t did and bypassed the in-radiator cooler and fitted an external cooler, was cheap and easily done

Thanks Guys, appreciate the comments!

As for an update, I ended up taking it straight into the dealership near me the next day after my post and after taking one look under the bonnet the guy said straight up that it was as expected - ruptured trans cooler in the radiator - trans has been sent off for a recondition and new radiator under warranty.

I think I have the same issue. I just got the box serviced 2 weeks ago and then this happens. the guy wants me to flush the rad and block. then get a rebuild on the box and trans cooler he said its not gonna be cheap. he said he can flush the box but does not recommend it as the damage has been done. anyone got any thoughts.

if it's not under warenty ,I would replace the radiator flush all the crap outa the engine ,then flush the box and refill see how it goes ,you might be lucky the box may be stuffed or it might go for another couple of years
