I'm sure other FG T owners out there would agree that they are as quiet as all buggery stock!

I am aware that the stock system flows very well and is good for tunes to around the 300kw mark however at this stage I just wanted it to sound a little ballsier without being loud or obtrusive. I did my research and ended up at Castle Hills Exhaust, and although they are better known for their GM products, they have a fair few Fords under their belt and their workmanship is quite well respected.

STOCK SYSTEM

I've read what people have said about different pipe combinations, 3" single, 3.5" single, 2.25" twin etc etc however I figured by replacing the 2 factory mufflers with straight through units, that I'd still be ahead of the stock system even if it splits into a dual after the first muffler in the stock system where as mine is a 3" all the way.

To be honest, it's taken 2 strips to CHE to get it right. With flow always being a priority for the muffler mob, we went with a smaller straight through muffler in the middle to begin with and boy did it sound horn. A little louder than I'd prefer however acceptable. What wasn't acceptable was the DRONE I got between 1750rpm and 2500rpm. Dave a CHE was quiet confident that a swap out to a larger straight through muffler should sort it out.

...AND it has, still a ballsy burble at idle and most importantly when cruising in a covered carpark looking for a spot. HORN. The drone at those revs previously mentioned is still there however greatly reduced, so much so that I will not be following it up any further. I'm more than happy with the way it sounds in all parts of the rev range under all driving conditions.

I do have a preference for the quieter and more refined sound and I think that I've got it with this combo. Wonderfully refined note when on the gas, burble when idling and just off idle, and a slight though quiet hum on the free way.

As for power gains? Who knows, and I don't really care, however common sense would assume a small gain was had. Not really detectable in normal day to day driving. Wouldn't have a problem recommending the boys at CHE, they were happy to answer any questions I had (I had a few) and it does appear that they do take pride in what they do, from what I could see.

so what size did you end up going for Nolz, 3"?

Hey there mate. Yeah, 3" all the way, through 2 straight through mufflers, with the rear muffler the cylindrical type and a lot smaller, straight through and through. The middle muffler is larger with the entry and exit holes staggered however the gas flow is unimpeded and you can still see through it.

I got the guys @ Castle hill exhaust to replace my centre mufler with a hotdog (fg xr6t m6 ute).

was exactly what I was after - just a nice note and you can actually hear the exhaust now. I would have liked a bit louder but dont want to piss the nbeighbours off to much at 5am.

I was a bit paranoid about the twin pipes not being level but they are perfect - although I notice how bad some are on a lot of other cars now.

That's the sort of attention to detail that impresses me, and can only wish there was more of it out there! As they were putting the finishing touches on it, someone would intermittently go out behind the car and check the pipes alignment with the bumper cut out to make sure things where level, in line, straight etc. Minor details like that go a long way in my book.
