This is what happens when the stock oil pump lets go. There are two common causes. One cause is shock loading on the gears when you hit a hard cut limiter (or a soft limiter alot) and the second being over revving and trying to push too much oil through the standard pump.

To guard against this, make sure your oil is up to temp (the oil is thicker when cold and is harder to push through the pump) before you go thrashing, or replace the oil pump with one that has been machined for higher flow and has billet gears in it. This won't make it indestructable, but it will be pretty hard (ie, you driving like a P-plater on V Black) to smash it.

Nah, not mine mate, but it could be unless I replace mine soon! A failure like this can cause other issues too, the motor this pump came off was knocked out of time as a result of pieces of metal from the pump getting into the timing chain and the timing sprocket. This leads to valves being damaged and possibly more extensive head damage. Not to mention all the shrapnel that ends up through the rest of the motor...

It sure was. I saw his bits and pieces of the oil pump when it was at Ford, looks nasty doesn't it!
