Hey im looking for a new ISP.

Am currently with Optus Broardband ADSL1, and im looking to upgrade to ADSL2 as my current contract has run out. Dont want to stay with optus as there new packages dont suit my needs.

Here are my requirements and if anyone can recommend an ISP that would be awsome:

ADSL2

Min 40gig download a month, must be good (like no drop outs or problems with connections etc...).

Am currently spending $70 a month so that or cheaper would be great.

Anyone have experience with NetSpace? They have a sweet package available. ADSL2, 40 gig a month(would prefer more), $59.95 a month. But I dunno if they are any good..

Also how much quicker is ADSL 2 than ADSL 1.. Worth the hype?

Any info or thoughts welcome

Cheers, Mike.

Funny you recommend them, just doing some research and they were named best ISP, dunno when but yea.. Im on there website right now LOL..

TPG and Optus are crap and Telstra were middle of the pack according to Whirlpool, which im told is Australias best broardband news site..

How do you rate them? Any problems?

Ok doin some more research and found out that your ADSL2 connection is best if your close to the phone line exchange place, and im about 800m from it WOOHOO my estimated speed would be 22mbit bites or bits which should be good LOL sounds good.. I was reading some guy was 2.7 kms away from his and he was gettin around 10mbit.

Yer internode is lookin better and better.. No peak off peak, but if im gonna be downloading faster than I might need more download allowence, plus the plan im looking at from internode is already more $$ than my current optus plan.

Yeah thanks for the input gents, I think I'll go with Internode, it'll be worth the extra $$.

Just another question, if I install a central line splitter, does that mean I dont need to put filters on the phone lines going into the wall sockets?

Nah havent checked out any naked plans but will do...

Mika, look at www.whirlpool.net.au

you can compare rates etc there...

A few of the more important things to remember are -

- How far from the exchange you are... This will effect your D/L and general line speed.

- The line 'cramming' %. This means for say every 1 meg of bandwidth to your exchange/street and/or area how many people/connections will the ISP allow before allocation more bandwidth to that location(s).

1.5 meg line may not actually get you a 1.5meg connection if that makes sense. You want to try and get a min of 75-80% line speed at all times, otherwise its a waste!

- If you have a D/L limit what charges if you go over.

- Try not to sign any 'period' of contract. Supply your own hardware (modem and router if you need a router) and this should prevent you from paying or being locked into a contract. (you will prob have a 3 month min period however - just for the connection).

- If you are/have been with Optus, assume your home phone is with Optus also?

If so you may be on the Optus 'Owned' network, this will prevent you from changing to another ISP which uses Telstra copper lines (wholesale) to provide the internet network. Therefore if you want to change to a new ISP, you will probably need to change your home phone provider. Make sure you triple check this with Optus and any new ISP's you consider looking at as the customer support person at the other end is most likely not someone that will know the answer to this.

- TPG isn't a 'bad' network, however if there is a lot of users of TPG in your area you will end up with a crap connection - they line cram very hard...

The best way to explain line cramming -

2 houses in the same street on different sides of the road...

H1 has a 1.5 Meg/512kb connection ISP1

the other H2 has 5meg ISP2

There is a direct link via the exchange with both ISP's however ISP2 provides say 25 houses in the same street, ISP 1 only 1...

The line speed during heavy peek periods for ISP1 will infact (prob be) higher then ISP2 as there is no users in the area hammering the line! This is also the case at the ISP's end for lines being provided to them from the likes of Telstra/Optus etc.

So be mindful of there line user rates %... :stupid:

I was actually part of the group which set up TPG's network about 10 yrs ago out of North Ryde, and it has never been a fool proof network... Good in some areas but not all...

Iinet - Ozemail, isnt to bad.

Internode is - good/bad depending on area (from what I can understand)

Optus - "Cable" would have been not a bad choice either. (bed you want to change).

There is a member on here that owns an ISP also... just cant remember who... Might be worth talking to them...

Also you can try a ISP based here in Sydney called PIP - www.pip.com.au they run about a 80% line speed to all locations. Not the cheapest however you will get a 'close to true' line speed!

Hope this helps!

Forgive my ignorance, but what's so special about those speeds? :spoton:

Mine sits on about 19000 down and 1000 up...and that's a few km from the exchange.
