hhmm ok then so after doing a bit more research, I'm getting prices on the spool rods and CP psitons in a kit from spool.

I Looked up ACL Race bearings which don't seem like a bad choice, but couldnt find anything on ARP Bearings.

Spool seemed to have a better description of their conrods than atomic as in the dimensions, metal used and what not. But they had no information on the CP pistons.

Spool also claim that no machining will be needed, I understand why you machine your block but how can these guys go around claiming you dont need to, but after you put it together it'll be all sorts of noisy and what not. just means you would have an unsatisfied customer when all they needed was a little machining and they could be the best parts in the world.

Anywho I'll wait til I hear the price back form spool,

but spool rods, CP pistons and ACL bearings might be a good choice??

As I said above, yes that's a good choice.

Without machining & crack testing your block, it wont only be noisey but will not be able to be used to it's full potential. If pistons aren't tight in the bore you'll have all sorts of trouble...

CP Pistons are a proven piston in these engines so don't stress. Spool also offer different pistons in their packages to suit the application so if you have something else in mind just ask

Here's what I got back from Brad @ Spool:

SPOOL rods , CP pistons ( offset pin ), rings, pins and locks included $2090

ACL race series mains $ 129.00

ACL race series b/e $ 69.00

ARP main studs $ 389.00

ARP Head studs $339.00

Cometic Headgasket $275.00

yeah that's a fair price, competitive with atomics pricing for sure.

So by the looks of it its really much for muchness between any sort of combo if its atomic or anything else or a mix of both, it's all good and it's all going to be strong.

Still beats me why these guys advertise with "no machining needed" I thought this odd at first but thought they must know what they're talking about! ah well machining it is!

Also VRS kit? excuse my ignorance but whats that?

Vehicle Re-seal Kit, it will cost you $200 something dollars, but has all the gaskets you need to replace when you re-build the motor mate.

When they say no machining needed I'm assuming they mean that you don't have to have the rods machined to fit the pistons. Some manufacturers leave that to the customer as different pistons require different things so they can be attached properly.

If you buy a rod/piston combo, the supplier will usually already have them matched, hence 'No Machining Required'

ah very good, that make sense.

So I could take it to an engine shop and get the block crack tested, honed and the rod big ends machined. Anything else I should get done to the block?

Where abouts would I get the VRS kit from? I was thinking I'd just buy all these items seperately!

Thanks guys you've been heaps of help!

You get new big end bearings with the ARP bearing kit so don't reuse old stockies. VRS kit could be sourced from Repco, Suoercrap, Coventry's etc.

Might as well put some billet oil pump gears in there while you're at it. Think they go for $450 through ATOMIC.

With all the parts Dean listed, VRS kit and Billet oil pump comes to $3900 + approx $1k for machining.

Would have a strong engine for under $5k.

Or just buy the new short engine through ford for $2.5k good for over 350rwkw
