Heya,

Just trying to understand the workings of the turbo in a mates BA XR6 turbo. The car is modified so here is a picture of the engine bay.

In a normal turbo/intercooler system doesn't the turbo spit out hot air into the intercooler, the intercooler cools the air, making it more dense and spits it into the plenum, then into the engine?

So, the turbo spits out hot air into the cross over? The intercooler puts cold air into the cross over and then the hot/cold air is put into the engine?

How does the CAI come into it?

Where does the turbo get air from?

Where does the intercooler get the air from?

The crossover is still two seperate channels.

CAI -> Crossover (right to left) -> Turbo -> Intercooler -> Crossover (left to right) -> Throttle body

Oh, so the air goes into the front of the turbo, and is spit out the back?

A pipe then runs front the rear of the turbo, under it, around near the CAI and into the intercooler?

On the rapid systems site they offer high flow and performer. The highflow doesn't use the crossover. What are the benefits of this? Does this mean I remove the CAI altogether?

ok.. the whole benefit of rapids system to to reduce the amount of piping needed to get air to the turbo quicker.. once u pull off the front bumper and put it on a hoist.. u will see how long the stock piping is.. the stock crossover gets very squished and doent allow enuff air to the turbo as to rapids kit where u can get 4" intakes that have less then 50cm of pipework to travel to the turbo then the stock which is over a meter. as the piping leaves the side of the turbo it gets squished down to wrap under the battery and this is what they call hot side piping cause the air is hot.. it then hits the cooler, bigger the cooler.. the more the air can flow thru it,, the cooler the air.. blah blah then instead of going in one side and coming out the other.. fords have same side in and out.. which then the pipe has to find a way to get back over to the throttle body.. (cold side piping.. and more contineous lengthy pipework) to summerise.. rapids kit shortens the pipework dramatically (quicker air to the engine).. make the pipe larger in diamiter (more air to flow thru), bigger intercooler (cool air a lot quicker and better air flow). hope that makes a lil more sense

The air still goes through the turbo when its not boosting, its just passing by though, not getting compressed.
