Ive never read any tests in any mags where they do the tests in an auto, does ne1 know of any? Ne1 care to air any opinions on which would be quicker? I understand auto and manual cars have a 3.45 rear diff ratio, surely the auto would be pretty damn similar to the manual in the 0-100 and the ¼? :oooh:

I have the auto and I am sure it is quicker once the car is moving ie: with drop down

from standing still I found the auto a bit sluggish off the mark ( maybe its traction control ) but once its moving, its quick. :oooh: :o

What he said.

Look at this way what do most drag racers use " AUTO " :oooh:

If you want to launch the auto: have in 1st gear, traction control off, foot on brake, foot an loud pedal to about 1500rpm (just before wheel spin). When you want to go, loud pedal to the floor and foot off brake. No lag as turbo comes into play straightaway. No wheel spin either.

I believe that doing this an auto would beat a manual most of the time as you would need to get a perfect launch in a manual with no wheel spin to match or beat this. B)

Just my thoughts on the matter, I'm now waiting for manual owners to air their thoughts. :D

Dont forget that the manual has to grab for third just before the 100 mark where the auto surpases that in second with ease. One more shift for the manual means slower time. And yes I have dragged a manual and yes my auto was quicker. Sorry stick boys ya cars only faster where the speed limit ends. (awaits the scorn from the manual chaps) :oooh:

The manual certainly accelerates faster from standstill.

First gear in manual is lower ratio than auto, hence more torque available to get 1800 kg moving.

Would require a diff ratio of about 3.9:1 to match overall ratio of manual box.

Read an article about a 6sp auto being considered by Ford in Motor Magazine (August edition I think)

Can handle 620 Nm, provide better gearing for acceleration down low using lower diff ratio,

AND provide an exceptional highway cruising and economy with a taller 6th gear...

Sounds good to me.

ciao

G'day attessa

Drag racers use modified autos for several reasons.

They are more consistent when bracket racing

They can be set up to change very fast, using trans kits

and they run them with high stall converters (typically 4000 rpm and above) to ensure engine is at

ideal rpm when the loud pedal is pumped to the floor.

This isn't ideal for everyday use, and certainly not for production warranty

trans kits are fitted to make the changes very quick, but this also places huge loads on

the whole driveline.

I run an auto, although my first intention was for the manual because they do perform

a bit better (as supplied by FORD). Based on other vehicles, you could expect about 0.3~0.5 seconds

slower over the 400 metres with the auto.

If anyone has some actual ET's, please post.

By the way, slower or not, the auto is an absolute blast.

with so much torque available over such a wide rpm band, who gives a $#it about an additional gear.

I haven't had so much fun driving. ever!

From the times I've seen both autos and manuals seem to run 14.1 second quarters, but 9 times out of ten the auto would run quicker because manuals are inconsisent and need a perfect launch to run the times where as the auto is a lot more consisent and easier to launch.

Now don't get me wrong about drag racing,

But it seems some people only brought the XR6T for traffic light drag racing.

What about the winding roads…….OPPS sorry drag racing is in a straight line …OH I forgot!

And what about the 60Kph to 120 Kph sprints, so in real driving terms you spend 95% of your driving time on road driving above 15Kph and 5% in taking off from traffic lights or should it be 95% of your time taking of from the traffic lights and 5% of acutely enjoying the driving sensation and the great mid range throw you in the seat acceleration with out no auto clutch slip.

Why buy a XR6T when you could have brought a Jap import and played around with it for less money or do the ultimate buy a R1 Yamaha or GSXR1000 Suzuki and have 0 to 100Kph times of 2 to 3 seconds and no gear change until 110Kph and all for around $17000.

Does it really matter if it is an auto or manual and about drag racers using auto…..5000 to 8000 rpm hi stalls and ripe your neck off gear changes NO THANKS not really street stuff.

It is a compromise between every thing, a manual will not do the job of an auto and a auto will not do the job of the manual even with SSS, our last car had a 5 speed SSS and yes it was fun but driving through the hills it was annoying.

At least with manuals you can give it a boot full and a dab on the clutch, spool the turbo up and power slid out of corners and in some instances in a straight line to…..how do you do it in a auto, but also how do you get a manual of the line cleanly to with out losing valuable time and heaps of wheel spin…..you can’t

There is only one good automatic or is it a manual in a car today….BMW SMC!
