They must consider them a higher theft risk than the xr6t, do you live in a major city Blonk? That would effect it as well. I changed to AAMI when I lowerd my ute & fitted the 19's, they said within reason any mods are ok as long as they don't make the car unroadworthy.

My curiosity got the better of me & found this information on www.wikipedia.com about cats & exhaust emissions.

A catalytic converter in an automobile's exhaust system provides an environment for a chemical reaction where unburned hydrocarbons completely combust, using platinum and rhodium as catalysts. Hence the combustion (redox) process continues, but outside the engine's combustion chamber, so no useful energy is extracted. Toxic car gases such as unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) and carbon monoxide (CO) would not exist if the fuel to energy conversion in the engine were perfect.

A three-way catalytic converter has three simultaneous tasks:

oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide: 2CO + O2 → 2CO2

reduction of nitrogen oxides to nitrogen: NOx → O2 + N2

oxidation of hydrocarbons (unburnt fuel) to carbon dioxide and water: CxHy + nO2 → xCO2 + mH2O

These three reactions are most balanced at the stoichiometric point, where there is a balanced amount of oxygen to fuel in the engine. When there is more oxygen than required, then the system is said to be running lean, and the system is in oxidizing conditions. The above two oxidizing reactions (oxidation of CO and hydrocarbons) are favoured. When there is more fuel than oxygen (stoichiometrically), then the engine is running rich. The reduction of NOx is favoured.

The stoichoimetric point for petrol is 14.7:1, ie:14.7:1 AFR, so leaning off our cars to around 12.5:1 to 13:1 with an edit should be improving emissions if I'm reading this correctly. So I can't see why it would be illegal.

Cheers,

Steve.

In Brisbane..... Over the phone.. They told me they are not insuring typhoons anymore but if I fitted a tracking device they may consider it..

Went to Suncorp and they insured at the same price as my XR

Jet - You are right, face to face I would have left the AAMI office with 2 of their secretaries under my arms, and that woulda pissed em off, hey.

Damn good value

that's bloody good mate! I have to ring RAC to get another quote for insurance on a Turbo. 18 months ago they quoted me $1900 but I was 20 back then.

I am now 22 and have 55% NCB (Rating 1) and pay $450 a year for the Fairmont insured for $28k.
