"Under the Swedish Constitution's Press Freedom Act, the right of a confidential press source to anonymity is protected, and criminal penalties apply to anyone acting to breach that right.

"Should the Senator or anyone else attempt to discover our source we will refer the matter to the Constitutional Police for prosecution, and, if necessary, ask that the Senator and anyone else involved be extradited to face justice for breaching fundamental rights."

I lauged so hard when I read that, I posted it up on whirlpool a few days ago before anything was published on the site, f*cking hilarious!

I think Conroy is the most hated person in Australian internet history, almost as bad as South Australia's Michael Atkinson who refuses to agree with R18+ game ratings!

I just can't understand this 'initiative' at all. Besides the fact that the filtering is technically infeasible and unreliable, and the other good points above, the government's own report stated that internet speed would be decreased by up to 75%. I've seen figures that have mentioned in the high 80s elsewhere. And then they have a separate broadband initiative that is meant to increase speeds elsewhere. If this gets passed, then you will be extremely lucky to get back to where you are today.

"The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people," Hitler wrote in Mein Kampf. "As long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation."

The Government has confirmed it's going to proceed with the internet censorship...

Measures to improve safety of the internet for families | Senator Stephen Conroy | Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy

Love how the report details cold hard facts and quotes specific measured values like "a small amount" and "negligible".

This is an interesting view on the announcement Australia Confirms Censorship Plans, Tells Fibs On The Filtering Trial

Being an ISP I have opposed this since it was announced last year.

Talk about a nanny country. Even China and Iran have less censorship than Oz.

I think I will be settign up a proxy farm in Fiji and charge $5 per month to bypass the filters.
