Because if it is a dicky sensor I would expect the engine and tranny computers would be going ape trying to figure out whats going on. When you turn the ignition on the ABS light should come on for a couple of seconds while the computer does a self check, then it should go out shortly after. IF the ABS light is not on you might have a damaged or interuppted signal between the ABS tonewheel and the sensor itself, maybe check the tonewheels on the rear of the car for chips or cracks or any crud that could be messing with the signal.
