hello all im having problems with my speedo not working every now and again my car still has warrenty and this will be the second time its stopped working in the last 6 months

but befor ford bullsh*t me about how they fixed it has anyone pulled their dash out and if so does it have a cable to the gearbox or a wire , assuming that's where they still pick up the speed from .

im guessing its an electrical problem because when it doesnt work its from the time the car starts think it may be the cluster am I right thinking this ? cheers to anyone who can help if not looks like ill be pulling out the dash over the weekend and having a look myself because ford are to f*cking retarded to fix things with out somebody else telling them whats broken half the time :B):

all wiring mate'

im 99% sure that there isnt a speed sensor as such but the speedo is done via the ecu

and is an average of the 4 wheel speed sensors for the abs.

like I said 99% sure

but 100% sure there isnt a cable as ive had several dashes out.

p.s u guys mighht be interested to know that I had a brand mew XR8 in today(16 kms on the clock) from a adelaide dealer and the air con didnt work, turned out to be a broken wire under the hood. lol

looking "ford" to working on these things regularly lol

Yeah speedo comes direct off the CAN Bus, Does the car play up or anything happen when the speedo isnt working. Because if it is a dicky sensor I would expect the engine and tranny computers would be going ape trying to figure out whats going on. Are you losing any other stuff on the cluster? ie tacho?

cheers to both the guys above for your info also everything else works fine on the cluster but I have been having trouble starting the car of late it just kicks over for a lot longer without starting then revs low for a few seconds when it does start and smells of fuel

if its a wheel speed sensor I'd bet the ABS light would be on. When you turn the ignition on the ABS light should come on for a couple of seconds while the computer does a self check, then it should go out shortly after. IF the ABS light is not on you might have a damaged or interuppted signal between the ABS tonewheel and the sensor itself, maybe check the tonewheels on the rear of the car for chips or cracks or any crud that could be messing with the signal.
