After finally getting my car up and having a look underneath I have noticed the tailshaft has quite alot of slop in it. Just wondering if this is usuall?? presuming not as you can move it about a fith of turn.. I'm guessing this s the reason behing the knocking noise when suddenly releasing the clutch or pumping the pedal at idle. im If not is this hard to fix? guessing a uni replacement?? I cant imagine it is too good for it.

Took it to ford the other day and when I picked it up they didnt say sh*t all bout it other than they replaced the diff oil and added a friction modifier... whatever the f**k that will do??

it is still under warranty till the end of nov so any ideas would be appreciated

I think you'll find that is quite normal for the tailshaft to move that much.

If you've got movement at every connection,eg the uni's, then I'd be concerned.

It's called backlash and every car has it.

Pumping your clutch pedal at idle won't really affect your tailshaft that much if it's in neutral either.

Most of the noise you will hear from pumping the clutch pedal is the clutch and thrust bearing assembly.

oh. kewl. thanx. Bit more at ease now. But is it normal to hear it?? the noise is only when in gear ie. crwaling in 2nd and pushing the clutch in then out. just worried I bought a dodgy one. The noise can be quite loud at times

cheers 4 the reply

Low stress mate. All normal.

Silly question, but why would you be pushing your clutch pedal in and out in second gear anyway?

diff bush I rekon.

I doubt it as he states the noise is there when engaging and disengaging the clutch at idle.

I'm also assuming he's doing it in neautral otherwise the noise may well just be normal backlash.

nah mate. FORD did me diff bush's the other day. I was only doing it (the clutch) when I noticed the noise. It also does it when in gear crawling and u stab the throttle. Im know the "backlash" is normal, just thought the noise may have suggested something.

My mate has a 03 or 04 mk1 ba xr6t ute, who when I asked said he had never noticed it

I'll try stop stressing now.. lol

thanks for ya input Phantmxr6 and xr06t
