Considering that most people on the road dont seem to be competant at all I would have to rate myself very highly.

BUT, considering the driving skills of people in motor sport etc - well I just dont stack up to them.

SO somewhere better then 5 but worse then 10 - how does 7.5 sound!

Sorry bez, can't really see the value in this?

This is very subjective ... I mean, how do you rate yourself, objectively? What are the benchmarks for things like risk taking, accident avoidance, etc., etc.?

You may give yourself a 7, but in reality, you're only a 6 rated on a consistent, measurable guide.

I understand the feeling/intention of the post, but I just don't see that you will get any meaninful numbers out of it.

... BTW, I'm a 10. ;)

The value in this is to determine how good people think they are, not to get an indication of how good they actually are.

Stand by for my next thread which will include a downloadable, fully interactive driving skills package.

7-ish...

Pluses:

- I cover 1000km/week on average.

- I've done both defensive and advanced driving courses

- I really enjoy driving, and will go driving for no other reason than to get better at it and get more familiar with the T.

- I don't trust anyone else on the road!!

Minuses:

- a couple of prangs 12-15 years ago (when I thought I was a 10)

- still get an itchy right foot in the presence of an SS, XR8, etc...

Can you rate yourself? Not really! Others have to do it for you! I have complete a few driving courses that have all been great fun but most importantly have taught me something!

I completed a Defensive driving course at DECA in shepparton in Victoria

a Advanced Driving course

a High speed driving course

a 4x4 driving course

All of these things have taught me how to be a better driver, for every day and also for when I'm driving fast or the like! But the thing that has improved my driving the most was getting my motor bike license! You learn more about braking and the like than in cars, but the main thing is you learn to watch what other road users are doing. be they cars, trucks or people and dogs! I notice so much more now than before I rode bikes but I dont class my self as an unobervant person before hand!

I probably rate myself an 8 but then again I let my self down in a few ways

I can't handle idiots in cars or fools who think they can drive. Get in my way when I want to go fast around the twisties and the like and I get a bit hot under the collar

My wife says I'm generally a good driver but if someone cuts infront of me or trys to merge lanes stupidly then I go off! At the same time she asked how people go around corners side ways and the like one day! of course I showed her and now she trusts my driving more! go figure!

this thread should be answered by all our better halves I think! The results woulsd be different!

Considering 95% of drivers think they are above average I dont think any of us can truly answer this accuratly. I cover around 60,000 k's a year I have only crashed a car once when run of the road by an on coming four wheel drive which I class as good driving as I rubbed a fence and not impailed on a huge bull bar. I agree with Harasn that a bike makes you a better driver as your awareness expands a great deal. Like he said braking road conditions etc have to be taken into far more depth let alone watching the tin top lunitics. I race and can hold my own, my missus thinks im an awesome driver, I love to drive and have driven and drive almost anything that has wheels and I think I still rate my self a 4.5.

Over estimation can be mistaken as confidence and that kills people.

Happy motoring.

rate myself like this ...

1. 10/10 in my dreams

2. 8/10 when I'm rested and travelling at steady speed without XRCISM

3. 6/10 when I'm tired or driving fast without XRCISM

4. 4/10 when I'm road raging or talking with XRCISM

5. 2/10 when I'm on the phone to XRCISM

6. 0/10 when I'm falling asleep or knocked unconscious by XRCISM

need food, sleep, absolutely no alcohol and XRCISMs approval to keep me out of trouble behind the wheel

I'd say I'm a 4. I'm on my p's and I tend to drive like a p plater. I have had no accidents, only one person slammed into me when I was on my L's. But I do a few silly things sometimes, but I'm a teenager and everyone does it when there in their teens.

I rate myself good enough to do what I have to do everyday without getting flustered, lose concentration, remain kind to the car and avoid being involved in or creating accidents. Remaining smooth and calm is my overriding doctrine.

I am also skilled and experienced enough to know that I am not 10 out of 10 nor will I drive above 80% of my skill and experience.

Suffice to say no one has EVER gotten away from me in a pursuit in either the city or country.

A sensible head that doesn't have tunnel vision will be the safest driver around.
