How To Launch A Manual Xr6t?

Hi guys,

Just wondering how you guys launch your manual T for best performance. Mine is stock, just got CAPA flash tuner (tunes to 8psi with stock valve springs and 220 RWKW, pretty low).

I did try to rev it up to 2500RPM with traction control off. However, it was so hard to get off the line since no traction and too much wheel spin at the back, hence I got embarrassing beaten by my mate's stock WRX. Has anyone here tried with a WRX yet? I know the WRX is slow in 1/4 mile (not that slow, should match a stock BA XR6T at 14.3s), but the REX seems to get off the line so quick and stay ahead of my car as it's a AWD. I beat other Jap car like Skyline and S15 a few times but no chance for a REX.

Should we put traction control ON or OFF when take off? How much should we rev it up to?

Another question is how come an automatic XR6T is quicker than a manual one? I tried to tell this to all my mates but nobody believes it. They keep saying because I'm a sh*t driver. For all cars except Falcon and prob Holden, manual should be faster than automatic. The fact for XR6T is that no matter how much you good at shifting gear on a manual XR6T, you should lose to an automatic one with the same mods. Is it correct? And how to explain this?

For launching try and slip the clutch a little at ~2300 - 2500rpm. Slip it too much & you'll fry it so just play it by ear & if you see smoke/smell clutch, BACK OFF! Lol. An aftermarket clutch is your best bet cause they have the ability to be ridden off the line :innocent:

As for the manual being a little slower than auto with similar mods...

Firstly it's the launch. Manuals can't build boost off the line so they get slower launches. These cars also have 'drive by wire' which is an electronic throttle system. Every time you change gears the ECU is programmed to shut the throttle a little to preserve the driveline... This in turn creates turbo lag as boost pressure is lost from the throttle closing :(

Look into the new launch control/flat shifting kit that's floating around on this site & you'll be frying WRX's all day every day :stupid:

Hi all,

I need some advice on how to take off pretty quickly in a BF xr6 turbo 6sp manual. (mostly on city streets)

I'm not a hoon or anything like that, but let's say a late model SS came up along side me, thinking he has a chance against a T, it'd be nice to show him what all the rage about T's is for.............

Some simple step by step instructions would really help....

I've heard of some ppl getting axle damage and the like from not doing it properly, so need some good advice from ppl who know how to do it without doing any major damage....

The fact of the matter is you are only going to be good at launching, and driving for that matter, with practice.

Joe Bloggs might say 'Try this and that and you should be alright'.

Or. If you dump your clutch at xyz revs you should be ok.

It all comes down to practice and knowing how your car reacts to the different inputs you give it.

I know I can't drive my car for s*&t with shoes on. I've always driven a car barefoot because you have the best feeling through your feet when they aren't covered. When I drive with shoes on I miss smoothe shift points, good clutch take up when starting off from a standstill and so on.

Just go out and practice mate. Just don't try too hard or you might end up damaging something.

I have the FG xr6t manual, I have a g-tech gauge which measures 0-100 & 1/4 mile times, launch control is the slowest time I get 0-100, the launch rpm is 3500 was 5.6secs, but you have to slide the clutch to get away clean, best time I got 0-100 is 5.3secs walking it off line at 1500rpm to 2000rpm, squeeze the loud pedal about half way, once you pull about 3000rpm flat to the floor, shift 1st to 2nd at 5500rpm and 2nd to 3rd at 6000rpm and 3rd to 4th at 6000rpm and ring it's neck in 4th which is 180km/h and at that point the 400m is up.

using this method I got 5.3 secs 0-100 & 1/4 mile 13.5secs trap speed was 180km/h but car had only 2100kms on it so I think I can do better when motor is alittle looser.

Get some good tyres!

I picked up some Toyo PROXES 4's for the rear a couple of weeks ago and I've never felt so much traction in all my life. In my old BA MKII all I had was the Dunlops, and after chewing through 4 of them in 25000ks with the F6, I've finally found a tyre that I'll be buying for the next few years.

With these new tyres I can build revs a little higher, ride the clutch less and get away from the line a lot quicker. I've beaten a couple of motor bikes off the line recently where as with the Dunlops I wouldn't stand a chance and I'd be fishtailing up the road and backing off the throttle trying to hook it up.

So get some better tyres and practise your launch on a few different road surfaces to find your car's sweet spot :buttrock:

As others have said there is no rule as to what is the best way to launch, it depends a lot on the surface and tyres.

But you try to take off as hard as you can (for the condition) without spinning the tyres too much.

On the street I launch it at just above 2000 and use the clutch to control the wheel spin (got to ride it a little), if it starts to spin I generally hold it there until it get's traction and then plant the accelerator. But you need to feel and listen what the clutch, engine and tyres are doing. It's all in the balance, don't smoke it up but don't bog it down either.

For me this works great on the street, but the strip is a complete different story with a loads more grip and the stupid helmet with the windows closed making me deaf, should get an over sized open face helmet.

In regards to traction control, DO NOT USE IT when taking off hard, it will slow you down and it's not too good for transmission.
