Stock Speakers No Good?

Hi Guys,

Bought myself a new ex Police Force Territory Turbo yesterday, am extremely happy with it, half RRP and only 12 months old.

Going to do the Nizpro mods, probably will wait till the warrant has expired though, not sure just yet.

I have one issue with the Territory, the stock speakers sound like absolute crap, they are "hollow" sounding, I've played with the bass and trebble and balance/fade etc but I can't get the speakers to sound even remotely decent.

Is this a known issue? Anyone able to recommend a good set of speakers for the Territory or is it the built in audio system that's the problem and not the speakers?

Your right the speakers are junk. Upgrading them isn’t quite a open and shut job but it isn’t to bad if you’re handy with a drill and screw driver. Assuming you have the base model turbo not the Ghia (not that the supposed ‘premium Sound’ sound system is any better mind you)

Factory speakers are 5.25” and are mounted on steel pods that are riveted to the door frame, you will need to drill the rivets out and replace the factory crap with something decent. You can fit bigger speakers but you will need to make / buy speakers mounts to replace the factory ones, also note the hole in the door trim is only 5.5” so you won’t gain much by fitting 6 or 6.5” speakers unless you do some major surgery on the trim. Second problem is the head unit like most factory units it does not have any pre-outs to drive an amp so you will need to invest in a sound processor to modify the signal so an amp can be used. It’s fiddly and requires a reasonable amount of experience with auto sound systems but it can be made to sound half decent, budget for about $500 for 2 pair of reasonable 5.25” 2 way speakers, a cheap sound processor and a cheap amp to drive the speakers properly. You’ll pay around $1000 for the same work at a car audio store.

OK, the Ghia does change things a little as the head unit is high powered and the fronts already have a separate tweeter. Just doing the speakers will possibly keep you happy for a while as the high powered head unit will drive a set of quality speakers better than the standard one will. The speakers in the Ghia are a fraction better than the standard ones, (think $10 speakers in the standard setup and $12.50 speakers in the Ghia, yep an absolute joke). If you don't mind shopping over the net you can get some real bargains from some the US based car audio stores, google car audio online and have a look around, I picked up 2 sets of Cliff Designs speakers for mine and paid a little over $350 delivered from the US, retail for the same speakers here was over $1000. Lots of bargains out there so have a good look around.

You didn't make it clear in the first post, but do you have premium sound ie. 4 speakers + sub ?

thanks Paulie, I took your advice and ordered some good speakers from a USA car store. I'll possibly look at replacing the oem sub with an active sub (I was thinking this one: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-qQ6ySkarA5G/A...px?I=023THB200A ) if I'm still not happy with the sound, but I'm hoping as you said the speakers will be enough!
