Hey guys,

Im looking at buying my mates damaged 03' XR6T ute, has 58k's on the clock, 5 speed manual.

The misus will take the sedan and I'll have the ute...

He had taken it around the bend with a bit too much right foot and ended up in a small ditch. Damage is to the passenger side corner only.

Here is the issue.. it will not select reverse!!!

I have never driven one of these things in manual form, and to be honest wouldnt know where the cog would be located in the first place.

He had asked his gear box guy who confirms that because he was leaning on the gear stick during the impact, he had broken the 'plastic' rod and ball linkage to the cable.... He also said that we would have to drop the whole box in order to change this small plastic part??!!

I would appreciate any help, comments opinions about this.

Cheers fellas

Has this ute been looked at by a licensed smash repairer and declared repairable or repairable write-off? I can't really see what they are focussing on in the second pic, but I would make sure that it is worth while repairing it. How much would you be buying it for?

I looked at it last night and its actually mainly superficail damage. I am in insurance and one of my roles is assessing co-ordinator at AAMI. During my time I have seen some cars with much worse damage been repaired with no issues at all.

All the suspension components have been replaced and wheel aligned.

will need a new hinge panel and lower skirt panel besides the obvious.

Im going with my panel beater tomorrow afternoon to check it out.

Guy wants $10,500 for it at the moment. Will try and get him down to $9-9500

Sounds pretty fair considering the repairs needed. To fix the box will cost a couple of grand I guess (including labour) Maybe you should send Mal Wood Automotive a message to see what it would cost to put a 6spd in it - that way you can mod and not worry about busting the gear-box.

serious?? a couple of grand???

that's a bit more than what I expected, I actually liked the idea of a manual though..

what would be the most these boxes will take before they let go??

does the box need to be taken out in order to change this part??

By the way, Thanks for the prompt response and help Senna

The 5 spds are a weak link here. There is another topic currently active in the new posts section - 300rwkw kills the T5 quickly.

The gearbox will have to come out the fix it - that really isn't that hard or complicated, just ads up the labour charges

I'm doing sweet F-A here at work mate so helping you out here is making my day go quicker! :dontknow:

is it just me or is the door not attached at the bottom hinge in the 2nd pick?

Yeah, the lower hinge panel has been dragged slightly, I guess it has sheered the bolts clean off
