If its in the top end it will spin at half engine speed, this is very easy to pick up on. If it spins at engine speed youmay have a bent con rod which will knock the block and is very hard to diagnose as it sounds like its coming from everywhere.

The car drives as per normal, under load or whatever. The noise is coming from the rear of the head, specific that far but not down to the which of the four HLA on that piston.

Drop the drive belt off the front of the motor, run the motor for a minute or two and see if the tick conintues.A nick in a belt can make a tick as it passes over the pulleys.

Exhaust leaks can sound EXACTLY like a dodgy lifter. IF the noise decreases when the engine is hot its possible its an exhaust leak at the head.

Plain old ATF is a very very good lifter flush as its super thin so it winds up in the lifter nice and quick and it has good detergent properties. Add 500 to 750ml of trans fluid to your engine oil and run for around 10mins. drain the oil. Flush again with cheap oil and then put in some fresh oil with lifter free (or something similar added) this will usually sort out the noise if its just crud in the lifter cause insuffcient movement of the lifter slug and thusly excess lash.

If this doesn't sort it out you'l need to pull the motor down and check out the rockers to see if you can pick which one has slightly more wear than the others. thats about the only way you can pick it without changes all the lifter......

good luck

Luke

Thanks 03XR6T & Hiddeous, I'll print that one out for the mech. But sounds like that will definitly do the job if its just a clogged lifter. Heres hoping. :spoton:

Seriously considering it now, as I think its gettin louder on its own. Or as you say, it could be some else yet.

Bascially I'll take it down to the workshop and get them to pull the head off and check for any wear, hopfully they can spot

the HLA and I'll contact you and hopfully get them sent to me express.

Cheers for your help micky69 and everyone elses input....

Does it just move side to side or is there forward/backward movement as well?

There will always be slight play in them as the km's rack up but when they start moving every which way & grind the bearings are about to let go
