Xr6 Turbo BA 2003 Model

Hi Guys,

Got a ticking noise just recently, passenger side at the rear of the engine which gets louder with higher rpm (1800rpm onwards).

I toke it down to the workshop and they checked tightness of the manifold bolts etc and in short they believe it to be the Tappets or

Hydraulic Lash Adjusters whatever they are.

Local Ford Dealership doesnt sell the HLAs by themselfs but come in a assembly which comes with some other part, anyway $99.00 each, so do

the maths, you have 24 of these suckers and that's $2376 just for the parts.

I know its probably just one but still it remains a guessing game when the engine is pulled down cos you can not be specfic (so iam told)

and means I would have to buy a few of these at least to give it a shot. And add $440 in labour for each try. Also I was told its best to do all

of them, as there's only one now the others will follow.

Can someone shead some light on this and would anyone know how I can get the HLAs by themselfs? I'm told they should be bout $14.00 each.

Although that's fairly high km's for a turbo car, there are lot's on this site with more than that & no dramas. How long have you owned it & do you know what sort of life it had before you took posession?

Injectors make a funny ticking sound sometimes so could just be that? They don't usually get louder/faster as revs increase though.

What oil was used at the last service & what was used at the one previous if you can recall?

Bought it from a Dealership on the magic mile in Brisbane 5 months ago. And will never do it again..... the Car I assume has had a hard life because it use to be a

pursuit car. Did not know this at time of purchase, was revealed to me later after money had been exchanged.

Rear diff cover cracked, needs repair and diff service, rear diff mount needs replacment, the list goes on..... Forget the HLAs for a moment, my current quote for

repairs is nearly $3000.00, and its from trust worthly workshop.

On top of all that this noise has appeared........

Oil used was Valvoline Pro-Blend X Semi-Synthetic.

Injectors are next on my list to get cleaned up and to ensure all is running well...

P.S Their Warranty is complete $#%$#% no mounts, or external damage covered, meaning only select parts of the diff, gearbox and engine. They only cover

the real expensive parts of the car, but makes little difference because it is restricted to $1000.00 per claim. In this case, it does not help at all.

The injectors will most certainly get faster. After all, as rpm increases the injector cycles needs to match.

I would be very surprised if the hydraulic lifters are worn out. I think it could be the injectors you're hearing.

Well the only reason I believe it to be the HLA/s is that its get louder as you rev over 1800rpm. Not to mention the workshop

thinks so to. By using that.. ummm..... that listening tool....forget what its called

Maybe they ain't worn out, maybe just clogged up. At the moment I am running some lash adjuster treatment. At next service if it hasn't

gone away, they will perform a engine flush/adjuster flush (not 100% sure whats involved)

But anyway I'am wondering if anyone else has had a problem alike to mine or there again know how to get a hold of HLAs and not in a

assembly for in case worst comes to worst. :msm:

....thanks for the suggestion adam, I'll be doing the injectors soon just incase (and they probably need a clean up too), I'm gonna try everything I can before I lay out the big bucks to fix this noise.

If its in the top end it will spin at half engine speed, this is very easy to pick up on. If it spins at engine speed youmay have a bent con rod which will knock the block and is very hard to diagnose as it sounds like its coming from everywhere.
