Coles Myer launches discount-fuel

Sunday 27 July 2003, 10:05 AM

Australia's biggest retailer Coles Myer will launch a discount-fuel offer across Victoria on Monday.

Customers who spend $30 or more at Coles or Bi-Lo supermarkets or Liquorland in Victoria will be able to get a discount of four cents a litre on Shell fuel, under the scheme.

It will begin at 7am (AEST) at 151 new Coles Express Service Stations across the state, and is the first stage of a planned national scheme.

The offer is an attempt by Coles Myer to claw back sales and customers lost to rival Woolworths, which already offers a discount of four cents a litre to shoppers who spend $30 or more.

Coles Myer chief executive John Fletcher said the Victorian launch would change the dynamics of supermarket and liquor store offers in Australia.

"From tomorrow, the message is that when you shop at Coles, Bi-Lo or Liquorland, the savings don't stop when you leave the store," he said.

"We are offering our supermarket and Liquorland customers quality fuel at a great price, and, through our extensive statewide network, at great convenience.

"The vast majority of our Coles Express Service Stations are very close to our supermarkets and Liquorland stores."

Mr Fletcher said the scheme would be extended to other states if it was successful in Victoria.

"Given a successful Victorian rollout, a national petrol-discount offer would be fully operational at over 580 Coles express Service Stations across Australia by mid-2004," he said.

Coles Myer announced last month it had paid $94 million for 584 service stations throughout Australia, after drawn-out negotiations with oil refiner Shell.

Woolworths has a 10 per cent share of the market, selling 46 million litres of petrol a week at its 280 Petrol Plus stations.
