Once 12 or more demerit points are accrued then a licence suspension is imposed. This is the same for the other States as well though they will also refer to losing points not accuring them, as to suggest that you have won something by earning ponts.

I.B.

Not true in NSW.

Once you accrue 12 points you choose either:

1. you lose your licence for a period ... 3 or more months

or

2. keep your licence and go on probation for 12 months; but if you have just one offence you will lose your licence for DOUBLE the period you would have lost it in the first place.

I call it the double or nothing policy.

I have just come off a 12 months probation period, instead of licence being suspended.

I copped a very nasty 6 points double demerit hit almost 3 years ago, booked at 1am for 20kph over in a 100kph zone in the middle of nowhere on a country road. The cop didn't even tell me it was double demerits, as I thought it started 24 hours later. That hurt, and I think the double demerits have placed a lot of licences in jeapardy.

Then got caught driving sedately in Melbourne for BV2 chatting to jp300 in spitting rain in an unfamilar area in a slug rental car. Didn't even know I was speeding, but it was a road works area (didn't see the sign). Cop told me it was 3 points, so I asked if it counts in NSW. He said no, so I thought ok then. BS it did count.

point dont ALWAYS tranfer between states. I have heard from many sources (vic roads/rta employee's included) that it is a bit random whether or not it does, I got a fine for 15+ over in NSW on a double points weekend, and I saw nada on my licence (THANK GOD!!!... also good that the cop let me off with 15+ I was actually going 130... so he said... and the speedo... and the GPS)

Lost license twice all up 2 years. Wreckless. DD and driving under suspension.

I was on my p's at the time so I blew like 0,03 bastards pinned me I wasn't even tipsy

Over-reacting politicians to the so-called P plate carnage Australia wide introduced these laws. An 0.03 reading is a lil low but if your restriced to zero as some drivers are, then you know that even half a drink is pushing your luck.

But if your driving a bus full of passengers or a truck of LPG then any reading is going to be too high.

A lot of our traffic laws are an over reaction to the carnage on our roads. The high percentage of people who have lost their licences as a result of these laws ( as can be seen in this poll) are the collateral damage of these politicians bad decisions.

Unfortunately it is easier to bring in silly laws and look to be trying to do something, rather than tackling the actual reasons that so many people die on our roads. The main probs being our substandard roads and no actual driver training other than how to parallel park and stop at a stop sign. Real driver training and a comprehensive overhaul of our road system so that it is in line with that found in many European countries would save a lot of lives.

It is quicker, cheaper and easier to come up with silly laws. Often solutions that are quick, easy and painless are often wrong!

Totally agree Craig, I've always thought that the driver education requirements we have are useless! There is no wet weather requirement nor is there a night time requirement. Both of these situations demand different skills to dry, day time weather.

Also, if the politicians actually cam up with real solutions to the problems, they'd have to spend money to impliment them. Introducing useless laws not only makes it look like they're doing something, they get to collect billions of dollars in fines.
