Turbo Conversion

hey guys, I took my car in to my mechanic yesterday expecting him to install my turbo setup onto my ba. He called me today with 900 dollars worth of parts that u had missing. These parts were all quoted from ford.

My mechanic didnt want to drill and tap my sump so he wants me to buy a new one which is 356.

He said something about needing an oil cooler, filter housing and the lines which cost around 400 all up

He also said he wanted to put in a decomp plate to lower my compression as he thinks my bottom end will blow up

What are your thoughts? Ive got the car on hold atm lol. Need some advice

The motor wont blow up, just keep the boost level sane.

If he's happy to remove the sump, give it a welder... he can drill and weld on the threaded bung, shouldnt cost more than half an hours labour.

You dont need to de-comp it, the comp ratio is higher than the turbo motor, but its not overly high... its fine for medium boost levels.

Get the oil lines made up by enzed or a mobile guy, or buy the ETM oil line & filter kit... return line needs to be made/bought, and water lines if you have a water cooler turbo ( ie stock xr6t )

The lines will add up alot though, so maybe try a wreckers for the whole lot, would be the cheapest option.

sorry to hear... I went to a local hydraulic hose bloke and he was able to set me up with an oil line, an oil return. I used a tee peice out of the oil pressure sender to get the oil. he supplied me with all the fittings and hoses for about $135

an oil coooler would be great but not a nessesity. . tell him to man up and tap the sump... I was told that sump removal is a motor out job and that sounds like a headache to me.

G'day mate. You dont neesd to de-comp your engine, but just make sure you have a very good tune done on it because if your car runs into detonation you will break things. Definately tell your mechanic to man up and tap the sump. You dont need to take the sump out to do this. If he's going to replace the sump he needs to take it out anyway, and if he's going to do that he might as well tap it. Remember that tune is everything, and you dont need an oil cooler but it definately wouldnt hurt. Hope this helps you, good luck!

I agree with every body mate I did all mine myself I drilled and tapped mine with the sump still in there yeah it was a pain , mine isn't decompressed but im only running moderate boost levels and I dont run an oil cooler either . I do agree with your mechanic to some degree aswell the oil cooler is a good idea it will help the sump he just wants you to pay more so he can have an easier time and as for the decompression it is the way to go if you want to run bigger boost . but also keeping in mind in the long run you would be better off rebuilding the bottom end with stronger , lower compression pistons . so all in all mate it really lies with you as to what you want to do hope this helps

Doing things the cheap and easy way such as drilling and tapping the sump in the car is easy done in the backyard but from a business perspective the mechanic has to look at things like what if the drill shavings get into the oil pickup and do damage to the engine and you come back complaining about your blown engine.

I can see where he is coming from, he wants to do it properly to protect his reputation and also his bank balance should any damage be done to your engine.

Its not the best idea to do it with the sump on for that exact reason, but getting a new sump? this means taking the sump off anyways, why wouldn't you take it off, tap it, clean it thoroughly to prevent any swarf getting into the engine and then you've done it a lot cheaper than a new sump, that way you have done a good job and have a happy customer who doesnt have to spend 900 smackers on parts.

hmmmm funny I done mine in the car and I got no shavings in the sump at all guys

I put grease on the drill bit and slowly drilled it stopping frequently to clean the grease and apply more when it was thru it got sprayed and drained = no filings in the sump at all

but at the same time I wouldnt recommend people doing it it is risky

so each to their own I guess
