Well.. I Ran Out Of Petrol Today

I've driven various cars over 20 years and never ran out of petrol before, but tonight I was driving home from work in my XR6T when my engine cut out. I Knew I was low on petrol but my trip computer was telling me I still had 56 k's left! I'll never trust it again! I should've been more wary of this as once when I filled my tank (trip computer: 40 k's left) it took 67 litres to fill it so I only had 1 litre left! Not really enough to get 40 k's on! Anyone else had erroneous fuel guage readings like this?

G'day Tony,

Haven't had a problem in a car with a trip computer ('92 Fairlane and '01 LTD) but my Familia had a humped tank (think inverted u) and therefore had two senders, and quite often it would show no fuel then suddenly bring the gauge back up again. I ran out of fuel once that way!

I'm also pretty sure that the distance to empty only works based on current (or recent) throttle settings. I.e coast down hills n things and it won't realyl show a realistic distance because the engine isn't doing much, but rock on out to wakefield and go for a fang and you might see it show something different.

I've always been a bit tentative about on board fuel calculators, but having checked mine a few times, it appears that it is quite accurate.

Yesterday I had 40kms to empty registering and put in 60 litres to fill the tank.

That would mean I had about 4-5 litres left when it read empty, so I feel confident in my one.

I recognise this problem as I have run out of fuel 3 times in the "T" over the past 4 months, and most times with 40-55 k's left according to the trip computer.

The last time it happened the trip computer showed 57 k's left, and the fuel gauge was on about 1/8 full so I decided to complain about it, and my dealer acknowledged that this had been a problem on a couple of cars.

He stressed that the fuel computer only gave a reasonable indication, but as the fuel gauge was incorrect also, they decided to change the fuel sender in the tank, and so far it appears to be more realistic, with the fuel gauge moving down from full after about 50 k's, where before I could do over 100 k's before it started moving.

Ive had no problems with my distance to empty. But from a full tank to half a tank seems to last for a while, then from half to empty it seems to just go. Whats the story behind that?

Whats the idea of trying to squeeze every last drop our of the tank? Don't you all realize that if you fill up when half empty it only ever costs you half as much.

Better to keep some in reserve.... not good to run the tank dry it can damage the pump.
