for those who love spending time on the water as much as they do in there cars we all know they joys of another expensive hobby/pasttime. just abit of forwarning for those who may not be aware but the new 406mhz digital epirbs were to become mandatory as of feb 2009 but have just been moved foward in qld to nov 1st, with the southern states perhaps pushing the date foward as well. even though your old epirb may have battery life left & still tests ok the signal will be switched off/unmonitored & deemed illegal. even though you might be hanging out to the last days dont. the signalling device in the new epirbs are only made in 1 factory in the world & can only be at this point produced in limited numbers so come closer to the date there will be a massive influx of people needing to purchase to the new one with demand out stretching supply. my advise is buy now. painswessex are offering them for between 450 & 500 & gme for about 399. pains have an extra 5yr battery replacement offer at the moment so that's my pick for even though you outlay abit more initially.

thanks john

Where do they draw the line as far as needing/having to have one on your boat?

Does it go on the size of the boat......or where you take it...or both?

its got nothing to do with the size of the boat its if you go more than 2nm of shore but unfortuantley it can be hard to tell because some islands just off shore can be classed as main land & some not. can be up the offcer as to what is what at the time. easier to just have one in my opinion but people take the risk all the time & they get caught all the time.

An eperib is a signal beacon hey that sends out a distress signal??

basically. it stands for emergency position indicating radio beacon.

senna, if he gets a safety gear package which more than likely he will make sure he gets an australian supplied flare kit. you only get 3yrs from a packet of flares & with imported ones which may be cheaper there bought into the country in bulk which usually means up to 6mths can be gone before there sold to the consumer. also any boat at or over 5mtrs needs a fire extinguisher. just a few things people forget or dont think about when buying bits & pieces for boating.

if anyone has any questions in the future about boating you can pm me or post up here. what I dont know I'll find out for ya.

cool thanks mate, I'm pretty sure they are throwing most of the safety stuff in the deal for him, but I'll double check on those things
