I own a CD DVD recording and distribution company and we have quite a few national and international artists signed. I can tell you this much about Australian, American & European Idol, combined they have made Dicko more than 300 million.

It doesn't matter much how good these performers might be, or how strong or limp wristed, the winners of the last 2 couldn't even get picked up for a record deal. 99% of the time new artists sign a contract that gives them the world on the front page and takes it all back on the next 50. It can be a dirty business that revolves around a bottom line from mostly one hit wonders who end up with bugger all. There is a huge amount of great talent to supply a relatively limited demand and its all about money. Because they can't see beyond their desire for stardom they will sign their lives away, a lot of artists are lucky to end up with 50 cents a unit royality for a CD and as little as 10 cents for a download. Even if they do get a contract and go Gold in Aust 35,000 units, its still only 10K or so. To make any money they need to do a successfull national tour and have a recording go triple platinum 210,000 units, which is extremely rare, and will only pay about 70K in royalities and maybe another 50K in appearance fees, and another giving a gross income of about 95K, trouble is you have to keep doing it year after year. So when you hear a new artist has sold a million or so recordings, it usually doesn't mean much except that people knew who they were for a while.

see that's fu(ked, they do most of the hard work and get stuff all for it. My point was this guy is pritty good for a shera and this was the only way he has a chance of a line in the music industry(why you would want it fu(ks me). I hope he dosent go all the way in this comp and someone picks him up and makes him a real star, cos he seems like a nice aussie bloke with a great additude. GIVE IT A GO..

Hi Kona, Resonanz Recordings. There are exceptions to the rule and some artists, especially the established ones can get great royality advances and up to $3 per unit. Its the new comers that can get shafted. Consider a CD can be produced in Aus in volume for $1 and the artist on a good wicket is going to get $2 and the retailer is going to put a 40% mark up on a new release selling at $30, the distributor is getting $18 minus $3. And for the record we pay our artists on average $3.50 for a hard copy and $2.50 for MP3s from one of our sites. I could also get product landed here from China and Malaysia for half of what it costs to produce in Australia, although increasing freight costs are narrowing the gap. Prefer to keep the Aus factories going. The whole inductry is a mess of mergers, takeovers, bankruptcies, and bad management at the moment. We are growing every month and I believe that looking after staff, artists, and suppliers has been a significant contribution to that.

Most successful Australian and Kiwi artists are known locally and internationally for being great people and easy to work with. Its amazing how many can do the pub circuits here, get their act down pat and make a killing in the US, Crowded House, AC DC, Savage Garden, to name a few, not to mention the long line of actors, they put in the persistance, take 10 years to become an overnight success and then come home rich and famous. Shame you have to leave the counrty to become successful, but the market size here can't service the amount of local talent.

So what kind of artist's?

General Music, New Age, Nature Sounds, Adult Contemporary. We distribute everything from Mario Lanza to Punk Rock under licencing agreements from other labels and also directly with the artists themselves undr our own label we were No 3 independent last time I looked. We are a member of ARIA so our royalities are audited and paid to an aorganisation called AMCOST who distribute them to the singers and writers.
