Buying A Car Interstate

Hey everyone,

Had a quick search on this topic but it didn't really clear things up for me..

Im pretty keen on a car that is situated in Victoria (I'm from NSW), now from what I've read, if I buy it I have a few options..

a) Put rego in my name in Victoria and pay stamp duty, drive the car back and then re-register it at the RTA, don't have to pay stamp duty and all is good.

If the Victorian rego is in my name does that mean I get the refund on the rego that was left (9 months)? Do I also get a refund for the CTP, or does this carry over interstate? Do I have to be a resident of Victoria to register it in my name?

b) Go to VicRoads with the owner and cancel the rego in Victoria and lose the refund on the rego, and then get a unregistered vehicle permit to drive the car back to NSW and get all the inspections done (AUVIS, etc). Re-register it in NSW.

Does anyone know how much a AUVIS inspection will cost? The car is an 05 July Xr6 and all that's done to it is 19" alloys and lowered. Are there any other costs that I should know about during this process?

So you didnt cancel the previous rego before driving it home?

Did you have to get an AUVIS inspection?

The bloke in Victoria has said he'll let the car go for 19k with stock rims, or 20k with 19" advantis.

Its a bright yellow, manual, lowered, MK11 Ba with 51000kms on the clock.

Just trying to weight up whether it will all be worth it or not.

you cant transfer reg between states. yo u will need to go to a vicroads office to be able to cancel and get a refund.

vic doesnt have CTP as such. is all included in the price of rego so when ya cancel that it all goes.

Best bet is to get owner to refund rego take that off price of car and u get permit to drive it. permit cost about 50 bucks depends how long ya get it.

Also permit HAS to come from origin state and will do all other states u need to travel through. so u will only need a vic permit.

then once u in nsw get rwc (blue slip I think isnt it) and away ya go. pay 12months reg again. abut only way

there was a loop hole for me when I got a car from nsw to vic. but I have lived in NSW and my name was in their system still.

I'm pretty sure you can either:

Cash the plates in at Vicroads before you leave then purchase a permit to drive the car interstate without rego

OR

Drive the car home from VIC, post the plates to VicRoads and receive a rebate (cheaper option I think)

Then must have the car roadworthied in NSW and then it can be registered with the RTA...

I was 1 day away from buying a GT-R from NSW so that's the opposite of what I had to do :sleepystuff:

Can any one offer advice on my plan?

I live in Perth WA and I'm keen on purchasing a new/demo vehicle from a dealer in NSW. There is a greater selection of vehicles over there and we get ripped off with the highest Stamp Duty in Australia in the West.

My plan is to purchase in NSW using my sisters address as my residence (she lives in Sydney) and pay NSW stamp duty. I can then have a bit of a driving holiday by taking the coastal route around to Adelaide and then freight the car to Perth. The saving in stamp duty (over $2000 on an $80K vehicle) will cover the airfares for me and the wife and the freight cost from Adelaide to Perth with some left over for fuel.

On my return to Perth I transfer the licence after a few months to WA plates. I checked with DPI and the transfer cost on a near new vehicle is about $60 as it does not have to be inspected. I'll get a refund on the NSW rego and WA DPI will accept the NSW plates and return them for about $20.

Have any of you WA members ever done this?
