If they can get the typhoon cheap then im sure they also get the XR6T cheap as well or SS or whatever. There is still $10k-$15k wastage per car. For every 10 typhoons they could have grabbed 13 times XR6T's. Dont know who approved that business case.Lets be real what is needed is the minimum spec performance car that will have adequate handling, speed and space to store their things. Is FPV Typhoon the minimum spec car for those duties? What did they do in 1980 when the FPV Typhoon wasnt available (lucky if they did get air cond back then)Talk about a small minded view of the world.Firstly, not all Typhoons are unmarked, they have both marked and unmarked.2nd, while they may use them at times for radar trap work, it's the other times they use them for attention grabbing, such as public events, PR days, escorting dignitries, etc. If having a Typhoon at an RBT or radar trap intimidates someone into not running, then they've stopped a potetintial chase, and the related dangers involved.3rd, you go on as if every Police car is Typhoon, the fact is they're very few of them around.Finally, while to us the gap between a T and a Phoon is big, as I stated earlier, the Gov't pays no tax, LCT, FBT, or stamp duty on the new car, they also get fleet, on top of that (as was the case with the WRXs, the Lotus the NSW Police have, the couple of Rx7s they had a few years ago, and more), the car manufacturers often offer them to the Police as specials as PR for the Police and a cheap promo for the manufacturer in the form of a solid endoursement (sometimes the cars are free for the Police to use and returned to the manufacturer after a set period, or they are sold for no more than a standard car). It's nothing new, Police forces and car manufacturers around the world have done it for years (even back to the 80s and before). The Phoon retains it's value better and the Government then onsell them for a much better margin than their T, plus they add tax and stamp duty on top. It had 58000kms on it and it was in very good condition. I was looking at the BF's they had there but this BA was in better condition then the BF's at the time execpt for the non white colour ones which were being sold over my budget. I couldn't say no to this BA. It was cheap, it appeared in really good nick and it had regulary servicing. The cops MUST look after their cars because if they don't, it presents a big OH&S issue. Since I have had it, the car has been very reliable with only a couple of problems, one was a radiator leak and the other one, a power steering leak which I believe are common problems and not just for cop cars and these were fixed under warranty. So at the end of the day, I saved several thousand dollars in buying a ex cop car over a privately owned vehicle. Yes, the cops might thrash them but who doesn't thrah their Turbo's, I wouldn't believe anyone who said they don't thrash their Turbo's because what is the point of having one??? It's more of a marketing ploy rather than the police actively going out to specifically buy them over anything else. Same as the manaro etc. that they used at one stage.And I'd much rather see them in a typhoon over a 380 patrol car! I'm sure there are Chrysler 300C SRT8's, BMW convertibles, GTS coupes etc rolling around. All promo for the manufacturer's and good PR for the coppers.
