Generic Tunes In Hot Climates

I just scored a Ford Flash 2 from Ratter awesome price of $610. Now that I have the box in Darwin, I was wondering if the generic tunes would be fine up here. I've heard that some people have had problems with CAPA tunes in hot humid climates (Darwin or Cairns). If so is it something I can adjust myself on the box. We haven't got much choice up here when it comes to custom tuning.

Mate same old same old. Generics can be dodgy in any climate. Get it on a dyno as soon you can.

I suspect that the reason "some people" say generics are worse in hot climates is because hot air will cause more ping. So if your tune is already causing ping, the hotter air will make it worse.

Glad you got it quickly.

as we discussed and sure others will agree, the best thing to do is get it on a local dyno and check the air fuel ratio to make sure it rich enough.

Air fuel ratio is not the only thing which can lead to safety of your motor, you need to make sure the motor does not ping at all whilst driving and on the dyno. You could use the experience of the dyno guy to get his opinion on whether it pings.

You also now have the ability to data log your car. You can data log knock sensor activity and then adjust timing as needed. The knock sensor on BA's are very sensitive and pick up too much back ground noise, but with out custom tuning, you do not have the ability to change them. But if you pulled enough timing to stop them from pulling timing themselves, you should be resonably safe.

Also fit a colder thermostat and adjust your fans to come on earlier to try to eliminate some of the power robbing heat.

The only real safe way is to custom tune, so be prepared to make a trip somewhere in the near future to get it done.

  • Still have a turbo, it's just on a diesel.

The only XR6T tuner in Darwin has retired and shut up shop, so even if you do jump on a dyno and find a dodgy tune there is nothing you can do about it other than returning it to stock.

This is not to say dont run generics as I know of two Ts that where up here, that ran fine on them, its just that you are out in the cold when it comes to modding these cars in darwin.

Thanks guys,

There was some talk of a guy from Blacktrack performance coming up soon but, he has had to postpone. I'll get him to check it when he comes up. I'll play it safe till then.

Just make sure your lines to the turbo aren't leaking.

I managed to break 3 turbos up here before I got rid of the T.
