I have started this topic to gather information on what brands of pistons members are using in their forged bottom ends and how noisy they are. I will be start buying my parts in the next few weeks and need your experiences and advice to make the best decision...

The following members posted the information below in my last thread - Forged Engine Tollerances

NINKA - Mahle - Quiet

Senna T Mahle - Quiet

ETM CP's - Quiet

Just to clarify, in my opinion factory is quiet, the Mahle pistons are mild - not noisy per say, but not as quiet as factory

I guess you could call that "Intermediate" :buttrock:

Threads merged... Makes sense to have all info about the same thing in the one thread.

Piston brand is one thing but if the clearances aren't spot on then anything will be noisey.

the pistons in these engine have a short skirt so as not to hang out the bottom of the bore at bdc, that will always lead to more knock than an engine with a shorter stroke that can use a longer piston skirt.

Hey Senna T (& others with forged pistons),

Can you hear your piston noise from inside the cabin of the vehicle at idle (+ do you have stock sounding exhaust)?

(Probly wont mind if it takes my attention away from buzzing 044...).

(Although dont really mind extra noise if it's the sound of something doing it's job..but rattle & buzz combined could be punishing)

yeah I can hear it at low rpm, but my exhaust is also pretty loud when its under load. If you combine my exhaust with the engine, the pod filter off the turbo and the Bosch 044, its a good idea to get a decent stereo! :stickpoke:

I use Mahle Pistons and quiet as with NO piston noise but I run minimal clearance piston to bore. Way way way less than Atomic would recommend when they sell the pistons.

Really its upto your engine assembler and the quality of the machine shop and if they use a dummy head plate when they Plateau hone the bores. If they don’t use a dummy head plate they will need to give it more clearance to accommodate cylinder distortion when the head is bolted on.

Do it tight without a dummy head plate and it will be very quiet when it seizes

Do it lose with or without a dummy head plate and it will knock its head off regardless of what pistons you use.

Talk to your engine rebuilder and see how many thousands of an inch clearance he recommends and that will tell you how good he is.

Totally agree F6, and though not exactly like stock sounding when idling, I can't hear any noise in the cabin, and only hear this when listening during idle, and when parking in our concrete parking garage.

CP pistons on the other hand, they were noisy hot or cold, and could be heard clearly in the cabin, much like a good quality Diesel :nono:
