Certainly sounds like flywheel isn't attached to the crank, but is that even possible with everything still spinning? I would think everything would be in pieces if that happened.

...could it be its the starter ring gear has come loose off the flywheel? Are you sure the whole flywheel turns by hand - or are you talking about the ring gear on the outside edge? That would make sense why the starter motor runs - but doesn't turn the crankshaft, etc.????

....just an idea

Mate you need to take it somewhere to take the box off and see what's going on. Maybe even ford if you can return everything back to stock.

I wouidnt go to ford if you payed me

it sounds like you have sheared the bolts off the flexplate or the actual flexplate bolt holes and the converter and flexplate are sitting on the input shaft off the box.. Is it easy to turn ????

PS have only seen this in very high hp cars .... another big burnout .... huh quick xr6

My cars off the road because a similar prob! I get a big vibration after 3500rpm and especially backing off the throttle from 5000 to 5500.

The flywheel bolts so I'm told cant handle the torque and over time they can stretch

causing the flywheel to become loose.

Can anyone else confirm if they have the same problem?

Is it very easy to turn the flywheel with your finger? It shouldn't be real easy if its still attached to the crank. Any noise when you turn the flywheel?

Yeah it does happen Alf, best bet is to purchase New Bolts when changing the clutch and flywheel or in this case flexplate add a bit of Loctite and torque them all to about 75 f/pounds. they dont stretch from the torque they stretch from over tightening .

the box has to come out, you will probably find that you need a new flex plate and a set of bolts.. should not cost that much !

Thanks Pete. this problem has already been rectified once before. I thought I'd kill 2 birds with one stone when doing the bottom end.

I might just have to put a c9 in it and join the 10 club
