Who says 1000kms is too soon to change your oil?

Do you do 1000kms on a dyno before changing oil? I don't think so.

I'm a mechanic by trade and I feel that the run in process I used plus the 1000kms of driving I did on the initial oil is plenty.

I'm still using mineral oil at the moment but I won't hesitate to be putting in fully synthetic when I get to the 5k mark.

Ambient temp where I live is generally high 30 degrees low 40's for most of the year and I would feel much more comfortable knowing I've got some added protection from oil breakdown due to high temps by using synthetic.

going to a synthetic to early can glass the bores and cause these engines to start using oil. This happend to my Kawasaki ZX636 when the dealer changed it to a full synthetic just after run in.Turned it in to a oilburner from new..Id be leaving it for atleast 10k before running a synthetic.

by 5k you have well and truely run it in, synth would not do any harm by this stage.

I have just built a new engine, one of many I have built over the years and my run in precedure is as follows.

Start up with penrite "running in" oil, do not allow to idle, minimum revs must be 3000rpm to bed in the cam, do this for 20 mins.

If dyno tuning run it hard, just dont let them revs fall for 20 mins, fine tuning can be done later.

Once the 20 mins is over dyno tune as per normal, give it heaps.

Drop the oil after 500klm, change oil filter, clean turbo supply line filter.

Replace with more penrite running in oil, run that till 5000klm, absolutely flog the engine especially in the first few hundred klm, babying it is your biggest enemy.

When you hit 5000klm drop that oil, change the oil filter and clean the turbo supply filter and replace with the full synthetic oil of your choice.

If you follow this your engine will have very good compression and make good power

I agree with not running a synthetic oil too early, but how can you determine too early?

If you drive like a nanna then yes I'd agree, do 10000kms.

But, if you run it hard for the first couple of thousand you should be right.

Each to their own I guess.
