After 2 Hours It's Still Hot!

Have you guys noticed how long the engine stays hot after it's switched off!!

After about 2 hours of it sitting in the driveway, not running of course, I thought I check the engine oil, water etc, and make sure everything is still ok. Anyway the engine was still quite hot. It was driven very easy before it was switched off (as it's still very young)

I remember back when I owned a Nissan TRX (non-turbo), and the thermo fan would start up about a minute after switching the car off. This doesn't happen with the XR6T. Should it??

Also, should you really shut it down staight away, a mate has a Nissan GTR and said it should have some sort of cooling after being switch off

l remember reading somewhere that the XR6T has been designed so that it doesnt need a minute or two of idiling before shutting down. Synthetic oil, the cooling system and the design of the turbo sheilding is such that its not necessary. l remember reading this and thinking it was a good thing. Sorry l cant recall the article.

That is interesting because it was suggested to me to get a Turbo Timer and I let it idle before turning off and usually drive at an idle for about a minute when leaving. I'll follow this up cause it is a pain in the butt.

I changed plugs and leads ( a hassle in itself regarding access for the leads) in my EF yesterday. The car was sitting for two hours also - and the motor was too hot to touch. Which I did with my knuckles over and over starting the plugs in their threads with my finger tips.

On the turbo timer thing - in the seventies turbo Saabs did the idle thing beofre being turned off. Current models don't require this.

My dealer has told me that no idling is required before turning it off. "Drive it as normal."

My dealer told that BS as well. Let me say it is BS, if you consider turbo longevity a priority.

Having owned heaps of turbo jap imports, I can say cooling the turbo down and warming it up at start should become second nature to you.

Sure the GT40 is both water and oil cooled, but it doesn’t mean you can run it white hot and then just switch it off and walk away. The oil will cook and leave toasty carbon deposits. Eventually throwing your turbo out of balance, then bang, there goes your turbo.

A friend just lost his GT28 turbo last weekend, due to mismanagement.

There was an article (can't remember where I read it) which mentions that there is an electronic after engine shutdown cooling system in place that flows coolant and oil to the turbo even after the engine is shut down. That's why dealers have been telling you to drive the car as normal.

Japanese turbo cars don't have anything like this in place hence the requirement to allow those cars to be idled after hard driving.

I think you'll find that the article you read was full of crap as there is no electronic oil pump or water pump. Its all still mechanical, so they only work if the motors running. we have not used any care when switching off the turbo prototype cars during testing except when under full boost for a fare while before shutting down. We have seen turbos white hot so did the idle for a while before shutting down. I would fit a turbo timer on mine. Unless you fitted a electric water pump and oil pump.
