The Corvette ZR1 set the blistering mark earlier this morning, piloted by GM development engineer Jim Mero. The announcement was made today by Tadge J. Juechter, the Corvette’s Chief Engineer, on the GMNext blog. Although the mark of 7 minutes 26.4 seconds is amazingly fast, Mero said that he thought he could shaved a couple tics off that mark. Conditions for the run were good, although there was a stiff headwind down the main straight away. The Corvette ZR1 that set the mark was completely stock, including a tank full of pump gas. With the ZR1 besting the GT-R’s mark, the gloves are probably officially off. Both Lexus and Acura have vowed that their upcoming supercars – the LF-A and NSX, respectively – will trump the GT-R, but the Japanese automakers will now have to set their sights on the most potent Chevrolet ever created. Moreover, Nissan is developing an even more high-performance V-Spec version of the GT-R, which could potentially trump the ZR1’s 7:26.4 lap time. The latest round of supercar wars just got very interesting…"

I guess the Japanese are now going to show the Italians how to make an extremely quick (relatively) cheap car.

Alvaro351 Member 30 Member For: 20y 3m 20d Location: Rockingham Posted 30/06/08 06:22 AM Share Posted 30/06/08 06:22 AM The issue is that up to the Z06 came out, none of them were great handlers, not from my personal experience, just random reviews. However, the LS7 powered Z06 also handles pretty well and now the ZR1 has gone up another couple of notches. But its all come at a price - The ZR1 is no longer around the US$70K mark, its more than US$100K. US$30K more than the base model GTR. U could buy a GTR, up the boost and have enough change for a Mustang. OR you could just buy a Porker GT3. I know which one I'd rather have. The other issue is that the ZR1 is a stripped track weapon with lots of composite panels and very stiff suspension. The GTR on the other hand, can hold two yank fat-a$$es in relative confort, and your granny can drive it to the shops to get some milk. Still, credit where credit is due. ps... as much as I like japanese cars, if coin wasn't an issue, I'd rather have the slow italian red cars . And I don't think the italians particularly care that the yanks or japanese have a couple of 500kW blasters in their hands.
