The "worst" feature? Compared to what? BA 6 speed auto? Merc Auto? Or are you comparing to a manual gearbox?

Did you have it in performance or try manual mode?

Sorry but the 6 speed auto (I have one in my Terri) is the best auto I've ever driven. If you want more control buy a manual - easy... :-)

The "worst" feature means simply that - it was the worst feature (of the car). I wasn't comparing it to any other car or any other auto. It was just very slow to kick down - trying to decide what gear to select when dropping from 6th back to 3rd. It seemed to take about 2 secs for the ECU to make the decision. I was so amazed the first time it did it I tried it again two more times to verify that the problem was not just a ME thing. NO, this auto is just too slow at making decisions. Maybe the program is different from the XR and FPV series because the Typhoon I drove last year didn't have the problem.

I tested it out in all modes - another "fault" I found it has is that, when in Manual mode, it will still kick down to a lower gear when accellerating.

And yes, you are correct; if you want more control buy a manual. That's it in a nutshell really.

that's actually a 'feature' not a fault. By design if you REALLY floor it and hit the kick down switch it will always drop back. It's in case you 'forget' that your in manual mode and do something that requires max acceleration.

I know the ZF can be tricked by a 'floor it, then back off a little'. But of course this may be totally different in the FG. Maybe Ford have enhanced it :-)

Well it's NOT a feature if the driver has reason to select a particular gear MANUALLY and then have the auto decide to do what IT likes and not what the driver wants. In particular when driving on a wet road and needing to merge quickly but without the danger of sudden loss of traction. OK, so I hear you say this car has no LSD and does have TC - that still may not be enough to save a total moron behind the wheel and believe me there are some out there! LOL.

I understand your point about kickdown for the idiot who forgets he has selected manual mode - these people really do need full autos and should NEVER select manual mode - pity the auto doesn't have an IDIOT position which automatically senses one behind the wheel and doesn't allow ANY manual input whatsoever. These are the same people who need self-canceling indicators, dusk sensing headlights and rain sensing wipers!!!

Must have been driven like a grandma for a while for the gearbox to be like that mate, anyway I won't get into a debate about autos.

If you don't like auto and that was the worst thing about the car, I guess that's a good sign!

I quite possibly the adaptive learning turning it in to ‘girl mode’.

That is concerning though, have only ever had this happen to me once with the BF, and that was where I intentionally tried to invoke it. But that was doing approx. 20km/h in fourth gear and pinning the accelerator flat or something ridiculous. Would hate to have it happen during normal driving. :roflmbo:

Do you know if theses have a different ‘tune’ for the autos Pattsy? As in compared to the XR?

Not that I know of, there is a nice G6E-T in Sensation with 19's giving me the eye outside here, I might take it for a spin and see how we go

Nah mate, I don't think it had been "grandma-ed" - in any event it should have been well "over it" by the time I put the first 10km on it - my drive was about 20km in all.

... and yeah, ... damn fine machine. At $60k it shames a lot of Euros that are double the price. The finish is great and performance generally is perfect for the market at which it is aimed.

Well I took a G6E-T for a spin earlier and the ZF was fine, did everything it was supposed to and would only drop down a gear in manual mode if I snapped the accelerator down very quickly, otherwise it stayed in gear.

The Auto mode was quite responsive but still took a little bit to realise what I wanted. In reality I have been conditioned to like the box and defend the car, I sell them. But at the same time I have driven an absolute mass of ZF equipped falcons and after a while you get to know the little quirks that they have, once you know about them, you sub-conciously avoid them.

Absolute weapon on the road though
