Hello all

Might have the opportunity to get my hands on a 98 wrx with around 90k on it. Its "unmodded" owned by a lady owner and shes wants around 15K for it. It comes with a RWC as well

What should I look for. What common faults do they have.

Hi, Ive got a MY99 with 21,000k on it. Had it since new. Great little car.

Main things to look for

Look out for noticeable bottom end engine Knocks, usually big ends bearing, (Not good !!), they will have some slight knocking (engine cold) due to piston slap, that’s normal.

The gearbox is fairly strong and will hold around 180 -200 kw atw, normal street driving. (Start launching and it’s a different story)

The diver’s side tappet cover banks are inherent to seeping oil, generally around the rear spark plug.

Be aware that timing chain needs replacing at 4 years or 100K ( $650 by Subaru)

The MY98 do not have the issue with the air flow meters. That’s a good thing !!!

Take it for a drive and make sure the gearbox feels normal. You will soon know if its had a hard time or not by the way it shifts.

They run around 13-14 PSI boost stock.

There are heaps of cheap parts around if you want to modify slightly.

Completely different car to drive than a XRT.

Fond memories of these! My uncle was on a 4 month waiting list for his when they first came out. He was one of the first in the ACT to get one. You all remember there was a huge buzz about them at the time. Every man and his dog wanted to run you at the lights and none of them had a chance. I went to my formal in it and was the coolest kid on the block. (it’s lame nowdays!)

Remember coming home from Bato Bay, up the Clyde and there was a VS Maloo ute in front of us. He saw us in the mirror and tried to get away – no chance. He was sideways everywhere and we followed right up his jaxie for a while in then overtook up the inside. In a gesture of sportsmanship his took his cap off as we went by!

Sorry for the tangent Robbo, they are great in the rain, good fun in the twisties and the only issue I remember is the gearbox and shafts going bang when you launch them at 5 grand!

They are nice cars but IMHO getting on a bit now! Almost 11 years old and with that does come issues you need to fix.. I owned my 07 XR6T and MY97 WRX (limited edition, black, usual engine / handling mods etc) side by side for a year and I can tell you, its much nicer having a newer car! Sure might cost more in fuel, but Ford "fix" any problems!

99% of GC8 (MY93-00) Subi's have been modded (and stripped to sell!) but check for usual wear and tear, hidden Manual boost controllers (I ran one at 17psi for a year and let me tell u boost cut in 5th isnt nice!) and blue smurf snot (redline oil) in gearbox. EASY and very effective way to hide any gearbox issues. Plenty of WRX workshops all around Australia so probably easier to just pay someone $100 to do it all!

Power to weight ratio is great though! With a full tank of fuel and a few tools in back mine weighed 1220kgs. With 125kwaw (cat back zorst only aty that stage) and a slipping clutch, I still managed low 13's all day long! Great fun for hill's runs

Might be worth spending the money to get a 99/00 if you can. Better brakes and updated lights etc. The interior is also updated (but I think the Nardi special edition interiors on MY97/98 were better!)

Try and have a look at a 99/00 model.

A few improvement over the 98s, as mentioned above.

I could take you for a ride in mine... After that I guarantee you, you will buy one.
