I've only driven the non turbo BA XR6 but from my first impressions of the handling was very poor, and I didnt really feel confident at approaching corners at anything over 170-180kph and it feels much worst as a passenger and felt unstable at lower speeds as well.

 I haven't found much need for going around corners at 170-180kph.

180 kph corners!!

Krash,

My review was based on actually owning and regularly driving both vehicles on a daily basis, and with the latest WRX, which is very different to all previous versions.

Your comment “The XR6T is better, simple really” is unsubstantiated and adds nothing to the debate.

As for insurance, we’ve yet to see the claims experience for the XR6T, so don’t get too excited. The XR6T has not been around long enough to say that WRX owners have more accident claim experience.

To date, I’ve had almost 10 claim free years of WRX usage, and paid around $22k in premiums…. “Ripped off” definitively.

Insurance companies just love to slog all turbo cars.

I’m not sure why you state “most WRX drivers would rate themselves as being above average drivers”… you must have access to information that I don’t. How then would XR6T drivers rate themselves …. Average, below average …… perhaps not.

In terms of security, if you check out http://www.nrma.com.au/pub/nrma/motor/car-...ng/sports.shtml , you’ll notice WRX now rates pretty good, and Ford lags behind.

I do agree “Having more grip does not make you a better driver.”…. however it does make driving much easier and controlled.

Track days, skid pan and other tuition is strongly recommended for all turbo drivers, both WRX and XR6T.

I'm away for 3 weeks. When I get back and have some time I'll post a pic of the cars.

Brian

Silverhawk

I did 180km/h corners in a very hot Hillman Hunter (ARGHHHHH!) in the early 70's when I was in my early 20's.

The 2 passengers didn't complain. I think they were slightly incapacitated.

Thinking about this now scares the hell out of me and makes me want to call them (and anyone else on the road at the time) and apologise!

God, I was lucky to get away with that sort of driving then. I don't want to think about it anymore!!!!

BCL - if you read my second reply, you would see that I am just a simple man with a simple sense of humour.

I actually agreed with just about everything you have said so far.

As for the insurance, premiums are worked out on averages for each car. Not on each individuals driving history, that's what insurance is all about. If you feel you are better than the average suby driver, and you're being ripped of, don't get insurance.

Given the average age of XR6T drivers, and the poor record of the younger average WRX driver, I doubt we will paying similar premiums in the future.

As far as how would XR6T drivers rate themselves, you just gave me an idea for a thread :ermm:

Sorry bez, just noted your 2nd reply.

As for insurance, I see it as mandatory. I do know how insurance works, as I have an actuarial background. You will note that Sydney people pay far more than anywhere else in this country.... maybe we may have a higher capacity to pay, and subsidise the rest of the country (TIC).

Yep you could start a poll regarding how xr6t drivers rate themselves.

Also maybe how many have had advanced driver training or track experience.

As usual, selective reading. I didn't say that the XR6T handled better than the WRX. Read my post again (and again) and you will see that I said that from what I have read and heard the XR6T handling is impressive when compared to similar sized cars (ie the commy's, even XR8 etc). Last time I looked the WRX was a smaller car, atleast 300-400 kg lighter. If they could get the XR6T to handle better it'd be the most amazing engineering feat ever. I compared the R34 skyline GT-T the WRX because it's weight is within about 50kg of a WRX atleast and as I said before, I'd prefer traction control and HICAS over AWD anyday. But this is an XR6T Vs WRX discussion. The WRX does handle better. Lower it and it's an unbalanced peice of crap. Leave it factory it's a bloody dream to drive. I must say that I was impressed when driving one my cousin said "what are slowing down for the roundabout for?" and it did get me around nicely. I'm still waiting for my XR6T and looking forward to recieving it. Because for me it's the right type of car. It's bigger, has plenty of room and it has real potential. My pulsar SSS is fun to drive and handles pretty well (until the fronts loose grip though and you get "let's go straight city") but it was getting a little small for me (being 2m tall is a major disadvantage sometimes) and I need some turbo rush ;)

Oh yeah, I have to add this bit. A few years back when the WRX was available in it second incarnation a magazine did a review (don't remember which one) They got the "new" WRX and the orginal/first WRX to compare the times. the new one did well, but the older (1year old) one didn't fare to well.. Why, because the gearbox blew when they were doing the testing. was pretty funny to read.

Insurance maybe higher in Sydney due to the higher risk of theft.

I only see third party property as being mandatory.

Before getting the XR6T, I drove a Silvia Turbo which I bought for $14000. Some insurance

companies wanted over $5000 to insure it. I backed my driving level and told them to stick it.

That being said, I still shat myself everytime I parked the thing in public!

I've driven both, in stock form the xr6t is way more fun to drive than a rexie and alot more comfortable....but a modified wrx would be seriously fun to drive too....having said that, a modified xr6t will be sex on wheels hehe... :)
