Its still a mighty effort, Toyota seems to be dominating the top 10 lately, Corolla has been the best selling car since they invented the wheel......

your old man is better getting the SR5 V6 or TD version and spending the change on some good off road mods then he can go and have a play on the weekends

Yeah.He can go and rip out the IFS and put a live axle coily front end in it and then play. There bloody useless as a 4WD unless you want to fart arse around on the beaach with it.If you have a look at the engine bay of the TRD Turdlux you will see how much effort went in to it.Bloody rough as guts coarse engine with a drum brake rear end.Worth $75k?

I work for a media company that produces a weekly motoring show on one of the major commercial TV networks. We recently took the TRD around QLD for 4 days as part of a road test story that hasn't gone to air yet.

I was there in a production role, not as a journo, or the presenter of the story so I'm not speaking for our company or anything like that but being that my old man has owned 5-6 hiluxes while I was growing up (and I have always thought they were a great car for what they are) I was pretty interested in how it would go and made sure I got one or two "spirited" sessions behind the wheel.

My thoughts... (feel free to take them with as many grains of salt as you like :funnydance: ).

The interior is pretty much identical to my dad's TD Hilux and is DEFINITELY NOT that of a ~70k car.

It's quick...ish but nothing that will blow you away by any means and imo the regular 4x4 Hilux's certainly aren't lacking the grunt necessary for the overtaking or light offroad work that most people will encounter.

The exterior is a bit plasticy and seems to have been an afterthought. The grill for example wouldn't survive an encounter with a large moth let alone anything more substantial (the old boy's TD has had run ins with roos, sinkholes and plenty of jobsite obstacles and still has never come off second best).

We had a bit of offroad fun on the trip (as you'd expect) and it did handle everything we threw at it with ease but not really noticeably better than the TD 4x4 hilux as far as I could tell.

Basically, I feel that for what they are, 4x4 Hilux's are a great rig and the TRD is no exception. If it was only say 5-10 grand more than any other Hilux I would urge anyone in the market for a tough work car with a bit of added appeal to buy 2. But I can't get away from the thought that for around $70,000 you can just get sooooo much more car for your money.

If he's considering spending that much and doesn't particularly need the offroad toughness of the Hilux tell your old man to get a TT. If it needs to be a tough work ute, see Grudgees post above.

The other TRD are full on POS so I can only assume these will be the same. I'd take a TT any day.
