Guys I need your expertise!!

Serviced the car the other day, simple oil and filter change. Also flushed the radiator and replaced coolant.

put everything back together, test drove, everything great.

Now, however, the heater has stopped working. The fan works fine but it simply won't blow hot air. Very frustrating during these cold months.

I went through every single fuse on both panels, all are in good order. :pimp:

Please help!!!!

Coolant is used as the means of providing heat in the heating system, as the hot water is piped through the heating core which the fan blows air over. When replacing coolant, the process is usually to set the heater to maximum to allow the replacement coolant to flow into these pipes (because you drained it out).

Most likely you have some form of air blockage which is stopping coolant from entering the heating core. Again the usual solution here is to set the heater to max, which allows hot coolant to flow into the heating core. Since you've probably done that, I'm not sure what the next step to clear the air pocket out will be. If there is some method you can use to "burp" the system of air, I'd follow that.

yeah thanks mate, makes sense.

do you think if I drained the coolant again and refilled this time with motor running and the heater at max it may release the air pocket??

Normally I would expct that all you would have to do is start the car up, and immediately set the heating system to max heat (fan speed should be irrelevant). Then just wait for the car to get to operating temperature where the thermostat opens and allows more coolant to flow. You'd then expect the heater core to flush the air out of itself.

Since these cars have the coolant reservoir at the top of the motor, folks are telling me it should "self air bleed" (I.e. burp itself).

Here are the instructions from the Ellery's manual:

  1. Install radiator drain plug (if it was removed)
  2. Install bottom hose & tighten clamps
  3. Add coolant to radiator
  4. Install cap, turn until fully locked
  5. Set heater to maximum
  6. Go for 10 minute drive
  7. Let engine cool enough to open filler cap again
  8. Fill tank to full/max line
  9. Replace cap

Apparently, that's all you need to do! Just make sure you leave the heater on max the whole time.
