Suit yourself mate. Have a read of this:

http://www.aa1car.com/library/turbo_repair.htm

"If the compressor blades are badly eroded, unfiltered air has been entering the intake system. Check for a missing, torn or poor fitting air filter."

thanks for the link.

But it's only one blade though.. not the whole compressor wheel. if the errosion was uniform, I would be more concerned that the problems was due to unfiltered air.

thanks for you reply.

just easier access and bigger filter.

Etms a site sponsor

thanks.. I'll check it out.

Move the shaft up and down , do them blades at any point touch the housing.... they shouldnt, but there is supposed to be a little movement but not excessive cause the bearings have not loaded up, if its on its way out , rebuilding the turbo is then your next step.. warranty ??? good luck with it

Thats not erosion that is impact damage. That why only one part of the wheel is effected. Does your car still have the factory crossover plenum fitted? Remove and have a look to see if the black coating is flaking off and has entered to trubine.

Erosion is more uniform and generally leaves heaps of small knickes on ALL the blades not localised damage on one blade

Hey luke,

thanks for that mate. it does make a bit of sense, however, how can some flaking affect only 1 blade?

I do run the factory crossover. Is it black paint or is it cast that way?

a few nights ago, I had this problem Link

It did sound at the time something falling off and the motor was making loud ticking, knocking sounds almost stalling. I turned the engine off and restarted and everything was fine.

I might double check with Paul from Elite when I go see him this week.

Yeah its had some fine "objects" going through it, looks like mine but mine has more wear and more little nicks in the blades, still boosts fine.

There can be any number of explanations for whats gone through the turbo, could be fine metal from the crossover section, bit of fine plastic from the airbox, dirt that's worked its way through the filter or got in through slightly loose clamps on the intake.

The inside of the comp housing looks like the blades have rubbed a little, so it could have some shaft play, but nothing too major as yet.

I wouldnt worry about it until your hearing loud siren noises on boost or performance has dropped.

It looks fine, just a little work, but if it does have excessive shaft play then its close to rebuild time... shaft play wise, up/down 1mm is normal, some have more, some less, in/out can have the same play and be fine.

If power is still up to par I wouldnt stress about it.

When shaft wear becomes really bad the turbo can make a siren kind of sound as the blades rub on the housing, but I doupt that will happen.
