They are in my opinion pretty smooth for a big strong box. If you mod your power level much you will need a stronger clutch, but the box will be strong enough for massive power.The majority of people get autos cause they cant be bothered changing gears in traffic etc. Also... for a drag race start autos are quicker.I have a manual 6 speed, and wouldnt choose any other, I like changing gears, and particularly when cornering on a twisty road, reckon it is better than an auto.
